I had two sets of 6 can lights that I converted to dimmable LED. When I had 5 of the 6 changed the old slide dimmer worked then when I changed the 6th one the dimmer no longer worked my guess is due to the lack of power now going through the switch.

And while at it would like to put a smart switch in.

Ditto the Inovelli but you'll need a hub for that (which I would recommend over WiFi anything). I would suggest the Hubitat.
