I have (had) a camera on my oak tree. Tree got hit by lightning. blew the camera 15 feet away. Camera was plugged in to a gfi outlet at base of tree. Question is, was this just a bad day or did the camera act as a lightning rod?

Unless the camera sits taller than the tree I would say the tree would have been hit regardless , the camera just was a casualty of the path of least resistance.

Like he said, trees are natural lightning rods. Never be under one during a lightning storm. The camera and wiring had no affect on it getting hit.

Ouch, we lost three $35, 000 cameras in a two massive electrical storms in a week. All had proper lighting protection as well.
