WLED is fantastic with an ESP8266 board.

Yes. WLED controlled addressable LEDs for nightlights and Xmas lights. I've built a bunch of motion, temp sensors. I have a bed presence system using some thin film resistors. Under cabinet dimmable pwm mosfet dumb led strips

@shingles what you use for controlling? Mobile app?
by (4.1k points)
@raki168 it's all controlled with HomeAssistant. There is an app for HomeAssistant. The esp boards are programed with ESPHome which is an add-on for HomeAssistant and makes it really easy.

@shingles through internet or without internet?

@raki168 Both. HomeAssistant runs locally but has ability to work outside of my home network through a couple different means. Theres diy methods as well as an easy to set up cloud feature which allows outside access as well as simple integration to Google home and Alexa.

I use some attached to smartthings to control my somfy blinds. A lot cheaper than buying the somfy bridge

Most inexpensive home automation gadget uses that chip from Espressif, or a variant. Smart plugs, robot vacuum, scale, switches, etc.

One monitors my pool temperature.

@galliot How do you monitor pool temp? What is your setup for this?
by (1.1k points)
I'm using a waterproof DS18B2 sensor, a 3. 3K resistor, and the ESP8266. It sends the temp to Home Assistant once per minute using MQTT.

Anyone using with his own made app? I mean without esphome?
by (200 points)
@raki168 yes I have made some smarter light timers with an esp8266. They have an LDR, RTC and a DHT22 and monitor the light level. They switch the lights on at a set level and then turn them off at a set time. They are also hooked into openHab and Alexa. I am slowly swapping over to ESP32 as they have a bit more grunt.

@delivery73317 can you show the app? May b I can get help from your timers

@raki168 here is my git repo for the ESP32 version the rtc and relay stuff is the same for both boards

Ran a bunch before I moved, just starting to do it again at the new place. Sprinkler control, thermostat, multiple rooms with temperature, humidity, motion and light sensors, smart plugs and switches (commercial but hacked firmware), frigid/freezer door/temperature monitor and I forget what else. All local, MQTT to Node Red with a pinhole to the internet for web page monitoring/access. Oh yeah, and doorbell and mailbox monitoring.

I have a bunch of lights, buttons and a fan running ESP8266 to MQTT into Homeseer to link up with my ZWave system.

Yes, I used them for remote monitor of temperature, humidity, gas detection and power monitor. with custom sketch for integration with openhab through mqtt. they work great and are very cheap
