Question

Really want to control my garage door from my phone but dont know where to start! I have some LightwaveRF stuff and a spare relay thing going. I wonder if that would do it?

GoGo Gate. Hooked to my existing non smart opener.

A 5 dollar nodemcu and a relay is what I did. I used a door / window sensor (wyze) on a little hinge that swings open when the top panel of the door is open. All in like 10 bucks.

While Aladdin Connect doesn't work through SmartThings, it does work with an Alexa skill. Plus, there's a phone app. I recommend it highly, because it's inexpensive and extremely easy to hook up.

Since you’re in the uk most of these comments won’t apply. What garage door opener have you got? You could use the LightwaveRF relay, it should work depending on your opener. Failing that the aeotec garage door controller is good.
