Someone mentioned putting a smart bulb in near where I wanted to have a sensor as it would extend the zwave/zigbee range? is this correct? bulbs act as range extenders? or a mesh?

Yes most bulbs will act as a repeater, but they must remain powered on.

Which brands act as repeaters ? none of mine do only the repeaters I have put in.

Cree (works, but not great) and Lightify (GE) do, supposedly Ikea ones do also.

@arthur1499 Cree work very well, and also work very well with Xiaomi devices

None of the Sengled Zigbee bulbs repeat, but they're solid performers other than that. I wish they did, but understand why they made the design decision to be endpoints only. I used Sylvania bulbs before, and they did not repeat - and they were problematic - but that was years ago under older branding, don't know if the current bulbs repeat or not.

Don't connect Hue bulbs directly to ST. They can disrupt the mesh.
