So many complaints lately about ST, and I have some of them too. But what’s our realistic alternative? Unless we have a real alternative, Samsung won’t listen. Alexa doesn’t cover most of the things I like in ST. I don’t have patience to start learning WebCore or IDE ‘coding’, etc. I wouldn’t mind a nominal hw investment to change platforms, but I’m not interested in replacing all my components to switch.

Hubitat is the realistic alternative.
by (1.1k points)
Not to someone without the patience to learn Webcore
by (12.9k points)
@kandykane true. ST still works fine for me.
by (8.7k points)
@kandykane Webcore is not that difficult. It’s actually sort of fun. I know nothing about coding, and Within one year, I’ve got 90+ devices running on 60+ pistons. Once you start using it, you’ll never look back! Get yourself a button and a color bulb. Set them up somewhere comfortable, and make a few pistons. I was up and running with it in less than a week.

Yeah, I was basically being snarky. Webcore is pretty simple, but you do need to set some hours aside to learn about it. therefore, if the OP doesn't have patience for that, he certainly isn't going to enjoy Hubitat.

I love Webcore and have been looking at Hubitat "just in case. " What about Hubitat's rule machine, though?
by (3.8k points)
@unclothe1851 I completely agree but the web interface is terrible. Samsung needs local processing asap though. I assume they won't until the classic app is retired

Hubitat doesn't work with Actiontiles right? That was the reason I stopped considering hubitat
by (310 points)
@confiding it has its own web dashboard, so AT is not required. If you want a 3rd party solution, sharptools. io works with Hubitat.
by (3.8k points)
@confiding correct. The built in dashboard is terrible.

I moved to Hubitat and it’s been great. It has a GUI driven rule machine as well as simple lighting and simple motion apps. No webcore needed!

Is Home Assistant also an option?
by (2k points)
@calkins Yes Home Assistant is an option.

I have recently purchased Hubitat and am looking to switch off ST, or at least minimizing how much I rely on it . ie if I keep it, it’ll be as a secondary.

Is the Wink hub still a thing? I remember debating between it and ST when I first got started.
by (110 points)
@lamellirostral94 Wink is still out there but not clear for how long.
by (320 points)
Not surprised. I used to see a lot of "works with wink" but not so much these days
by (3.8k points)
It's pretty much dead
by (1.7k points)
Wink worked great and used a lot more devices than people think. I have had a wink for about 3 years but it is struggling to stay afloat and it shows. It would go down 3 or 4 times a week which is why I am here now

ST working without a hiccup for me.
by (440 points)
@intercut Mine was as well until I switched to the new app .
by (1.1k points)
@intercut the new app has been . clearly it’s lacking a lot of features and functions from the old app so I’m not convinced on the engineering effort being put into ST in the long run

ST working ok for me, I think the internet is my worst problem
by (1.1k points)
@quern I’m WAY out in the sticks, using terrestrial radio internet and ST has been fine for me in this regards.

I just switched to Hubitat. I got tired of things taking forever to turn off on/off over the cloud. I also got tired of things not working at all because the SmartThings server was down or internet not working/spotty. It will be a bit of a pain moving my almost 100 things over, but worth it in the end.

@wintertide if they had a bigger userbase and a better dashboard I'd consider it. Local sounds great but no app and a crappy dashboard keep me from it. Especially with a wide and kids in the home. Home Assistant looks great until you spend weeks screwing with it to get it setup and barely functional. Then you try to automate something (ugh that yaml is terrible) and spend too much time maintaining the server for it to be worth it.
by (110 points)
@dynode look into node-red. Not one of my automations is in yaml

Dashboard has some limitations, but is quite customizable. There are actually some 3rd party apps that make it even more so.
by (3.8k points)
@ida44516 I'll be completely honest - I just don't like dealing with the whole thing. From updates to config, to automations. I've been in IT ops (zero linux to be fair) for 19 years. I hated every second of setting it up. If st was local I'd be perfectly content. With that said, they really should consider adding wifi support too. If Google or Amazon releases a true hub it's over for them in my opinion. Mass public perception favors these easy devices today unfortunately

I joined Hubitat FB group to learn more about it and there are just as much complaints there as in this group. I still thinks ST is the better choice. for now.

I do not know anything about coding and I just started using webcore and have my routines and automation in there pretty easy by copying others peoples pistons. I find that the routines so much faster and more reliable than it ever did in ST routines.
