Sorta ST related, I think. For those that have a newer Samsung refrigerator, with ST, do you like it? What do you actually use the ST ability for? Is the function of the fridge actually solid, or is the ST ability not worth the premium? Our LG crapped out over night, and I'm debating spending $500 to fix it (9 years old), or just buy a new unit, and if I do, is a Samsung a solid unit?

Samsung fridges do not get good reviews. Particularly the ice makers.

@crabstick4604 that's what I'm seeing, but honestly NO built in ice maker gets good reviews. Our LG has been a royal PITA since day 1.

@crabstick4604 the ice makers are crap, my friends have had theirs replaced 3 times in the last 2 years, it still does t make ice half the time. They just buy bagged ice now.

I have one and the ST app is terrible on it. Barely works always freezing. Doesn’t load half the time. It makes a nice digital picture frame though.

@premed what functionality does it actually have? Monitor temps?
by (1k points)
I do like the fact I get a notification if the door opens
by (1k points)
I think it got an update in the last few days. The only thing that really doesn’t work well is the ST app that is built in. But it doesn’t work well on phones so can’t expect much from the fridge

@betthezel seems a little better after the update

I bought one because I liked what I could do with it, such as turn lights on/off, set scenes, write memos, write a note for my wife from anywhere, monitor and set or dishwasher, and a few other things. Our Ring doorbell (not just a notification) pops up when someone is at the front door. There are several other apps built in, as well. In reality though, even the ones I like the most I seldom use. Probably the one I use the most is the calendar. You can sync it with your Google and/or Outlook calendar(s).

Haven't owned one, but the way I look at is that a fridge is intended to last 10-15 years, and the reality of it is that the tablet will likely only get updates for 3-5, so you're going to end up with a device with diminishing capabilities, or that entirely stops working long before the useful end of life of the actual fridge. I'd look at a wall mounted iPad or similar.

@beeson Hopefully when they come out with a newer one they will offer just the door that has the tablet on It for anyone who wants to upgrade

Don’t get an LG fridge. Well known issues with ice makers and drawer problems. We had 3 scheduled service calls where I took off work and the technician never showed.

@sugarcoat that's what we have now, and the compressor just went out. It's under the 10 year warranty, but it's still going to cost me $500+ out of pocket to fix. Debating on fixing or buying new (it's 8 years old). Our ice maker has been a problem since day 1, and my wife HATES it.

@betthezel my wife has the same feelings. LG will no longer be in our future
by (2k points)
@sugarcoat I joked with her that she sabotaged it to get a new one!

@disencumber that legit?
by (730 points)
@sugarcoat yup. It’s a major problem LG compressors failing. Tip: only buy America made refrigerators (GE, Whirlpool, KitchenAid). They may not have the latest tech but they will last much longer. Do not get Samsung. The ice machine will break within a few years.

My fridge sends a note across the top of my Sammy Frame TV when it's left open.

Also, you can cast the TV to the fridge if you just can't kiss a second of the game. And you can see the ring doorbell image in the fridge.

Fridge should last 15 plus years. Any tech will be obsolete within 5. Just go with a dumb fridge unless money is no object.

But a dumb fridge and a Google Hub.

I have a Samsung fridge with the tablet on the front love the fridge but will say the ice maker can be a pain. Have to defrost the ice maker ever like 2 months or it gets ice built up and jams
by (420 points)
@jonson that’s what’s wrong with LG. They under engineered the ice maker board, and the board itself froze. The new board reportedly has a fix on board for freezing. After mine was upgraded it’s not frozen since.
by (340 points)
Hmm I have been looking online for a fix and had not seen that I just figured it was because the ice maker was in the fridge so the moisture in the fridge got frozen on the ice maker and it can't dump the ice

I like the Ring functionality of it. But like said, the ST app is useless.
