Question

It is getting close to pool season. With summer coming, I would like to monitor pool temp. I was thinking of using a temp prob with Konnected after the pump but haven’t found a good how to. Anyone else have another diy method? I would like it in SmartThings so I can put it in ActionTiles.

I used Konnected's code on some generic NodeMCU boards, water tight cases, and some waterproof leads to make two separate units that can each report back two temperatures. I think each cost me $18 (all from Amazon) to make and I have one for the pool water / pool air temp, and another for fridge / freezer temp for the old fridge we have in the basement. Really was a bit of grabbing info from different sources, and i thought I would write something up, but no time. Amazon does have some nicer, much longer temp probes too (ASIN B01MY8U394), I may upgrade to those for the pool unit.

@erotica Where did you place the probes? Are they just a 2 wire connection? Wondering if I could do the same type of setup to a pentair temp sensor.

I have the lead that senses pool water temp in the skimmer basket and previous had it snaked down the back of a ladder. Ours is above ground with a Trex deck all around so hiding things like this might be a bit easier than an inground.

They are three wire. DS18B20: red (VCC), yellow(DATA) , black(GND)

@erotica I think the pentair is only 2 wire so that wont work.

@balzer I think you need the DS18B20, or similar to work with the NodeMCU boards. They are cheap, as the ones I bought the first go around included 5 leads and 5 resistors for $12 Prime at Amazon.

@erotica To connect this to the piping I would need to figure out how to seal the probe into a housing. I was hoping someone had done this previously.

@balzer Yeah - never looked to see if there was such a thing as PVC pipe drywell, but that would work great if something could be adapted to work like that. Going to look around now.

@balzer Looking up drywells I see Amazon has some deals - like this one -  - which has a 1/2" NPT thread. Now I am trying to see how big the drain fitting is on the Hayward pumps I have. They may also be 1/2", but the idea is right. Thread the drywell into the drain fitting, then slide the 5mm thermal into the 6mm drywell port with some thermal paste filling the void and tighten up the set screw.

@lixivium3 putting it in the pool and securing it? I don’t have any surface to secure it to except the filter intake and I think the suction would rip the bag eventually.

@balzer just a blob of waterproof silicone should do it. Stick it to the side of the pool somewhere out of sight.
