I'm wondering if I can lose weight without quitting drinking. How much alcohol can you drink over the weekend?

This can’t be serious?
by (11.7k points)
I'm sure it is. I worked with someone who used to talk about this kind of thing, that she NEEDED her alcohol every night (her words). Some people either really enjoy alcohol or are alcoholics, so they aren't going to be giving it up.
by (1.1k points)
@blind I can definitely understand that. I love myself some whiskey, but daily drinking is just not really conducive to weight loss. You gotta assess your priorities

Yep I haven’t stopped drinking and been losing 1kg per week! just keep within your points

It’s all about points. Plan for them and enjoy! My workshop leader loves her wine and has a glass every night. She doesn’t allow herself to have it until she has drank all of her water for the day though.

I prefer to eat my calories. But I have an acquaintance that drinks half his points and eats the other half. Can't imagine it's healthy or sustainable but his weight loss is pretty rapid.

I haven’t quit but have cut back. I used to have a glass of wine every night- I started beginning of January and have had one beer in that time. I track it and save it for a night out. Like someone else said- I prefer to eat my points.

I have 3 beers a night and more on weekends. I’m down 9 lbs in 5 weeks. During the week I do calculate it into my points and make sure to accommodate it. I probably could be losing more if I quit all together but that’s not a lifestyle I could maintain.
by (2.3k points)
@sulemasulf beers on the lake are even better!
by (5k points)
@numskull Mcginty that’s a very “judgey” non judgemental statement. Everyone on this plan is doing it in a way that fits their lifestyle.
by (2.3k points)
@mica3 amen!
by (5k points)
@sulemasulf that’s awful! I’m sure everyone posting their judgements are perfect
by (2.3k points)
@sulemasulf I also have been eating 2 thin mints a night and usually a candy at lunch. I have 42 points I’ll use them however I want.

I gave up alcohol haven't had it since the start of WW and I drank everyday. You need the points for food. Alcohol will only use your points and sabotage your journey. If you have a drink it should not be often.

That's up to you to either drink your points or eat them drinking them is a lot of empty calories and not beneficial to the body whereas whole foods would be much better for your health and well being it's your choice!

I think it’s easy to lose without it, but you can still lose with it as long as you plan properly. It does hit me much faster when I’m eating less though. One glass might feel like 2.
by (490 points)
@sula3 that is true. it does hit harder!

It's about burning more than you take in. just use your points and I find when having drinks more exercise is better, small adjustments its not a race it's a lifestyle and if you do without things you like all the time I think it sets you up for failure, we are all different. I'm a beer and wine girl. cheers ya'll

I have had to basically quit drinking wine- only on special occasions. For my body, even if I have the points for it, it completely stalls my weight loss! Play around with it and see what works for you. I plan to going back to drinking on weekends when I’m in maintenance. This plan is supposed to fit your lifestyle. See what works for you.

I'm going to admit this lol. I was drinking about 5 bottles of red wine a week plus some sips of sambuca. mmmm sugar! Any way I lost 50lbs in a year drinking this amount and doing WW and Exercise! Christmas gained back 25  Anyway, Sunday will be 28 days with no alcohol and 10 lbs dropped off, I'm not so puffy in my belly, and face. I'm going to stay away from alcohol for a year and see what the differences are. wish me luck! So yes you can loose but it takes way more effort

I don’t use mixers in my bourbon, but I have lost weight with having one or two most nights. I marked on my glass what a serving is. I pour right to the line. I’m not a sweets eater or evening snacker, so I typically have plenty of points left over. If I don’t, I skip it for the evening.

I'm giving up the booze for right now and seeing where it takes me. In the end, I'd rather eat my points than drink them. But my friend saves points for her daily glass of wine and she only 5 pounds away from goal and is doing great!

I recommend sugar free mixers and spirits. Also red wine. I didn’t drink beer until I was at my goal weight; too many points.

Yes. I have lost 70lbs since April and I am pretty sure my group thinks I am a raging alcoholic. summer is harder but I also am more active in summer. I only really drink one night a week in winter and save my points for that. some days all my points used are alcohol
by (2.3k points)
@fanni same here! I work in a school so summers I basic travel and spend time with friends and family which means even more drinking. This will be my first summer on WW so I’m curious how that will impact my habits. At the end of the day though I love playing games with my mom while we drink beers so I don’t see that changing. We also spend a fair amount of time doing yard work or hiking with friends so hopefully it won’t take me too far back
by (1.3k points)
@roofer salad and chicken. My alcohol is usually Truly seltzers, busch light beer(**same points basically as seltzer and I like it better! ), Bacardi limon which I mix with water. I occasionally have wine, but that is mainly in winter at home because I drink it room temp. I spend about 3 nights a week at the ball park watching my hubby and kids play ball and beer is only $1 or $1. 50 depending which park I go to. so i walk to the parks with the dog. Everything in moderation they say, but TBH. I am not going to have that many points unless I catch a buzz. so, call me am alcoholic, I don't care . it has worked for me

@fanni thank you!

@glyptography you have to make the plan work for YOU! Sorry, haters are gonna hate. yes, there are sacrifices in any weight loss plan, but with WW you get to choose your sacrifices - that is the beauty of it!

I have 2 drinks most nights (yeah I know it’s not the healthiest thing) and I still loose, as long as I do really good with the food. I still indulge in the food department too, one or two cheat meals. I may loose slower than someone else, but at least I still have my sanity.

My husband and I drank way more than we should before we started WW. We aren’t just doing this program to lose weight but also to be healthier, feel better, be more productive and get outside. We started Jan 2nd. We’ve both lost about 20 lbs and we’ve had two drinks a piece on 3 occasions. It was nice, but we’ve learned to control it and stop at two then go on about our lives. We don’t binge drink or let it ruin our next day by having too many. Knowing that alcohol isn’t good for us in general and that it will use up our points has been beneficial to us. WW is a lifestyle change and drinking everywhere I go or every night is not the lifestyle we wanted to live. We may have started the program thinking “but what about when we want to drink? ” But now w a couple of months under our belt it’s not a source of concern anymore. You may find the same is true for you. It becomes less of an issue the more you change.

@rashad76 thank you for your honesty! I want to feel better!

@glyptography then my advice is to make the changes you need to and don’t look back!

The best thing about ww is that you don't have to stop anything completely. Just plan ahead. I still drink, I can tell I'm more bloated and lose less if I drink beer. They have sugar free vodka, I mix it with soda water and lime. Good luck❤

If you quit eating, you could drink yourself into a stuber with 8 glasses of wine
