I was so used to going to the grocery store almost every other day for FRESH foods. Now with the crisis we only shop once a week now. Missing my fresh veggies and fruits. Any suggestions of what veggies and fruits to buy that last longer ?

I have been buying Romaine lettuce. I wash it, chop it up, and put it in the salad spinner. As I take it out of the spinner I blot it with a paper towel. I transfer it to a bowl that has an airtight lid. It seems to keep the lettuce from wilting. I am considering placing a paper towel on the top of the lettuce before I seal it next week

@peppermint6166 I also grate cheese  and put paper towels  under & over it, in an airtight container. Lasts a lot longer

I’ve only ever shopped once a week. Most fresh produce lasts a week.

Same here! These aren’t all fruits or veggies but. Brussel sprouts, kale, parsley, apples, cauliflower, sweet or bell peppers. Put your lettuce in ice water and leave in the fridge. It will last longer that way (old restaurant trick). If I think of other stuff, I’ll let you know.

I ended up stocking up on Green Giant riced cauliflower, veggie spirals, and a few others like that. And then I get fresh veggies whenever I can, usually from surrounding farmers.

You can take steps to make them last longer. Take fruit and soak it in 1 cup vinegar in a sink of water. Wash your greens, peppers, celery etc Air dry and wrap in paper towels and store in crisper.

I try to alternate and have lots of frozen and canned as well--canned corn, green beans mixed veg, frozen brocooli, green beans, riced cauliflower, etc--for fresh buy squash, red peppers, zucchini, apples, etc they stay good for a while--I have only purchase vegetables and fresh once (this past week) since a big shop to prepare on 3/9 and have had something fresh every day.

If you use Deb Myers green containers and bags you will be able to buy fresh fruits and veggies for two weeks at least!

Try storing them in green boxes made to naturally remove the gas that rots food. Home Shopping Network sells them. I am not connected in any way, I just like those little boxes. Food lasts weeks!

I'm buying frozen fruits. I had to make apple crisp because my apple got soft. As it gets warmer they don't last as long.

For fruit oranges, apples, pineapple can last a week in the fridge. Buy bananas in stages a couple very green, a couple yellows green and a couple yellow- if you do this you will get to day 4 or 5 with bananas. Strawberries and raspberries are basically one day. Blueberries can be pretty hardy though and last 4-5 days. We also buy frozen fruit to eat with yogurt and it is yummy. Veggies that last a while peppers, zucchini, eggplant, broccoli, asparagus and corn on the cob will last 4-5 days. Mushrooms, tomatoes usually only last 3-4 days. Lettuce varies but I have better luck if I wash and dry it and store it in baggies lined with paper towels in the fridge.

Carrots, celery, and cucumbers last waaaaay longer if you wrap them in aluminum foil. Apples, oranges, and grapes last much longer if you store them in the fridge. Grape/cherry tomatoes last longer than full size tomatoes. It has definitely been an adjustment. I stocked up on frozen veggies, unsweetened applesauce, and canned pineapple. I prefer to buy fresh, but it just isn't practical right now. I only shop once every 3 weeks.

Ive gone to can veggies, like corn and green beans. I did buy several pears, apples and oranges at my last trip to the store, but also canned pineapple. I use the pineapple in yogurt and fat free cottage cheese. Im doing purple and the cottage cheese with the pineapple makes a great zero point snack

Root vegetables are great, potatoes sweet and white, turnips, all squashes. Put paper towels in with fresh spinach, wrap celery in aluminum foil. Separate bananas from bunch and wrap the stem in foil - this really helps with not ripening too fast.

I used to live on an Island & we got fresh veggies every other month. I learnt by trial and error to extend the life of fresh produce. I put veggies in ziploc bags or plastic containers lined with paper towels and they last week's. I wash everything and cut hard veg like cauliflower and broccoli in to serving sizes and store things like zucchini whole. I do the same with my fruit and make sure to eat the softer fruit like melon first. Berries & mango freeze well in ziplock bags as do par boiled baby potatoes.

Wash you fruit in a 1 part white vinegar(has to be white vineagar) and a 10 part water solution. We put ours a big bowl and place fruit in bowl swish around and then dry on paper towel and put I fridge. I do my apples( but we don't put in fridge), grapes, strawberries ect. You would be amazed at what the water looks like when finished. We have had grapes and strawberries for a couple of weeks and they have not molded. The white vinegar removed the mold spores. We tend to put ours in gallon bags with a paper towel. This week I bought fresh broccoli last weekend and it is still fresh and crispy as well.

If you bring berries home rinse them right away in a solution of 1/4 c. Apple cider vinegar to 2 1/2 c. water. The small amount of acid in the vinegar kills the spores that causes the mold! You can’t taste the vinegar because it’s so diluted. I have had fresh raspberries in the refrigerator from 7 to 10 days without any mold. Thanks Dr. Oz - you’ve saved me a fortune in lost berries!

@endocarditis this works on strawberries or other type berries?
by (21.9k points)
@dreamy after I rinse them I take off the stem & store upside down in a flat pan that has paper towel in the bottom to soak up amy moisture. I store in refrigerator uncovered.
by (1.3k points)
@endocarditis thanks for the tip! I usually end up throwing out half our strawberries :)

I buy frozen now, they taste great, are great for protein drinks. Bananas stay a long time if once the are ripe you refrigerate. They will look bad but the fruit stays good. Watermelon and cantaloupe stay a long time
