I would like to incorporate more salmon or fish into my diet. I usually only get it at restaurants. I have a hard time buying and cooking salmon that tastes like it does in a good restaurant. It always seems extremely fishy when I make it at home. Anyone else have this problem or have any suggestions on where to buy it, fresh or frozen, what type tastes the best, favorite recipes, etc. ? Thanks! I appreciate your help!

I rinse the salmon, pat it dry, then rub liberally with evvo (extra virgin olive oil). After that, salt and a little pepper and bake at 400 degrees on parchment lined baking sheet. I usually have a pound filet and it takes about 26-28 minutes. (I do like Chef Paul ? salmon seasoning if you can find it) Squeeze with lemon and use clean tartar sauce if desired.

Most fresh fish will be "fishy" smelling. Maybe you could buy canned salmon instead or try Tilapia, very mild tasting fish.

We eat quite a bit of fish and salmon is not my favorite. We have some that my hubby caught in Alaska and it’s really good. I like to broil it and use this marinade. My fave way to eat salmon. Ppl tend to overcook it also, so watch that. We like cod, rock fish, crappie and halibut best.

Make sure you are buying wild salmon not farm raised. Fresh is better but most important wild, with farm it’s fed gain, and will taste totally different, usually good restaurants are serving wild caught.

I get Sam’s frozen salmon fillets, individually wrapped . Spray skillet with olive oil or Pam. Just salt, pepper, and garlic. Combo lid on. lid off. turning till it is grilled golden. Make tartar sauce with no sugar added or dill pickle relish and light mayo or Miracle whip. For me 1 point for miracle whip. 0 for salmon.

Marinade the salmon or shrimp. I do balsamic vinegar with minced garlic and 1 tsp of honey. Let it marinade for an hour or two then cook it on the stove. Simple and delicious.

I always use a teriyaki, brown sugar glaze on fresh salmon. In the grill or in the broiler. It is delicious and definitely not fishy.

Fresh salmon wild caught from whole foods. Yum. It's a treat. You are worth it. Bake it in hot oven. Season simply. Buy the 6 oz portioned piece. Enjoy.

I love the salmon burgers from the Whole Foods fish counter with a little Greek yogurt w lemon zest, fresh herbs, and Dijon mustard to top it. When I cook salmon filets, my trick is to try to undercook them because they keep cooking. I usually just heat in a sauté pan for 2-3 min per side depending on thickness.

@physicist3 the salmon burgers sound good!

@witchcraft they’re harder to screw up, come in multiple flavors, and my toddler likes them, too.

Buy very fresh Scottish salmon. Google how to cook. Cook right away and don’t overcook. There are lots of recipes but whatever one I use, I always serve with lemon .

I get the hunk of it from Costco. It is only fishy tasting occasionally. I sprinkle a good amount of Everything But the Bagel seasoning, and grill it on my George Foreman grill; yummy!

I prefer Steelhead Trout instead of Salmon. It’s much milder than Salmon. Purchase at Costco. Simply place in hot pan skin side up for 5 min. with med high heat. Then turn skin side down and put in hot 400 - 425 F oven for 5 min. Simply salt and pepper before cooking, serve with lemon. Tastes delicious.

I buy fresh Atlantic salmon at Food City meat counter. Put olive oil on it with salt and pepper and garlic salt. Cook it at 400 degrees for 24 minutes in my air fryer. It has a crusty outside, perfectly cooked texture on the inside. I eat it with vegetables and a dill pickle spear. I prefer it over any restaurant in town and there are a lot if great places to eat here.

@xenogenesis Atlantic salmon is actually farmed. I’ll only buy the Wild. Google farm raised fish and you may change your mind, it’s truly gross

CostCo has great salmon . we buy the Atlantic (it’s in a huge pkg), cut it up into single sized servings when we get home, then freeze them Many times I’ll season / rub a few of the pieces prior to freezing Search the WW recipes section or go to All Recipes. there’s lots of great (& very simple) ideas how to cook it out there

Aldis has huge packs. Trader Joe’s has small packs. I either make it teriyaki style with toasted sesame seeds or lemon , dill and a little butter and serve it with taziki. I bake it in a Pyrex glass pan at 350 for about 20 minutes.

Only buy Salmon that comes from the Ocean. Don't buy farm raised. The package should say where it came from
by (8.1k points)
@alfy53 Goodbar why? I buy farm raised Atlantic from Wellesley at Bjs and it’s great. I like them best with no skin and I too add olive oil and salt and pepper
by (1.8k points)
I believe its because farm raised fish are fed crap and they don't have much room to swim. So they are over crowded and swimming in filthy water.

Soak it in orange juice for a about 30 minutes before you cook it. It will take a lot of the “fishy” taste away. Also, if you’re able, consider grilling it on a cedar plank.

Don't buy sockeye salmon it is incredibly fishy tasting.

Be aware that “Atlantic” Salmon means it’s farmed. If you look into farmed fish you might switch to only buying Wild

I marinate my salmon fillet in a bit of honey, minced garlic and soy sauce for 15-30 minutes. Cook in AF for 10-12 minutes on 385. Or pan fry as well till no longer dark pink in the center.

Emeril makes a great Salmon seasoning. I also like to reduce OJ and add a little honey to make a nice sauce. A raspberry jam broiled on top is also delish. I like a raspberry/jalapeño one.

I buy it fresh and I like to make it in the oven or air fryer! It comes out great in the air fryer. I think the key is to season it or make a sauce. I like an Asian glaze or lemon Dijon with dill and garlic

I smear mayo on my fish to calm down the fishy taste. Frequently will add mustard dill garlic etc to season it right into the mayo then broil it.

@conceive There are only two ways I make salmon., 1 part mustard to 2 Parts mayo, black pepper mix and spread. That is first meal I made my husband.

I found salmon is fishy tasting regardless if fresh or frozen, learned to add to cooked salmon, malted vinegar and hot sauce, this helps to covered the fishy taste.

I know it costs more, but I honestly can taste the difference between farm raised & wild caught salmon, so I only buy wild caught. I don’t do anything fancy. I buy it with skin on, put either blackening seasoning or old bay & put it under the broiler for 3-5 min per side depending on thickness.

Hmmmm. I didn’t know that. I’ll definitely give it a try. thanks!

I use a mixture of pink Himalayan salt, garlic, and pepper, and dill weed. You don’t need to add any oil because the salmon has enough natural oil.

Do not buy farm raised. Frozen is fine as they flash freeze when the catch it. Fresh is always best if you live in a fishing area. Do not buy “previously “frozen that is now thawed in the store. I eat fish twice a week.

I actually buy wild caught, boneless skinless canned salmon at Sams. Tastes great, no waste — instead of tuna fish salad I have salmon salad. I also make salmon patties. There is always a recipe flyer in the pkg.

I like to have the skin removed in the store, then cut the filet up in one inch pieces. I put those on a lightly greased baking pan with some asparagus and sprinkle it all with some lemon pepper. Bake for 15 minutes at 350. its soooo good!

Google Ina Garten salmon recipes they are super easy and taste great, most are oven roasted. If you’re a Costco member their salmon is good, also recommend either Trader Joe’s or Harris Teeter for their salmon, good luck

I marinate my salmon fillet in a mixture of soy sauce A little ginger and garlic and a splash of lemon juice. I grill it (uncovered ) for approximately eight minutes depends on the size. Comes out a little scorched on top which gives it more flavor . The Secret is not to overdo it then it dries up.

I baste it liberally with lime juice, then cover it with fish seasoning. Wrap it in baking parchment and cook at 180 degrees for 35-30 minutes. Delicious. This is usually a salmon side so it makes four meals. Enjoy
