Why is it that applesauce has 0 points but fruit in a smoothie contains points?

I track my fruit for my smoothies as if I'm going to eat it. WW told me the reason it has points in a smoothie is because it becomes a liquid and your body doesn't acknowledge it as food so we end up being hungry sooner , which in tern means will end up eating more. Personally. I find smoothies very filling so I track it as a zero point food. Down 40 pounds so putting it in a smoothy hasn't hurt me.

There used to be(? ) an explanation in app. When you create a recipe and check the box for if it is a drink. Something about the amount of fruit in a smoothie and the consistency being less satiating than eating a whole fruit. Fruits contain caloric value and natural sugar, so 0 points is a grace and why we are cautioned against over indulging on certain 0 point foods.

@rend49334 that’s why I’m asking! Apple sauce is less satiating than eating an apple and there’s more than one apple in a serving of apple sauce. I made homemade apple sauce tonight and it was 0 points.

And who doesn't love a smoothie!  I used to make a yummy breakfast smoothie, then it came up to 11pts and I was like ! It was pretty dense though, protein powder, yogurt, banana, blueberries and strawberries. Wouldn't need lunch! ‍♀️

@rend49334 if you eat it with a spoon it’s free

@byrne Not sure I agree with this. I always eat smoothies with a spoon because I make them a bit thicker with more ice. still counts as points!

@ibadan6 I’m more confused now LOL

@byrne I don't think so . you might want to run that one by your group leader.

@agonize65205 how is it 0 points if it’s been cooked and puréed? Just curious as I thought cooked or altered fruit had points

@please3464 not sure. If you type in applesauce, unsweetened it shows up as 0 points. I’m not complaining! Happy it’s 0 but confused by the logic

@numskull this nice cream fruit is zero

Is that true?

I don’t think there is always a caloric explanation. It’s more of WW using the 0 points food to try to guide your eating decisions into certain directions.

0 points doesn't mean 0 calories. The whole points program is designed to help you make better choices. Points don't always correlate directly with a particular food's nutritional breakdown. If that makes sense. Stop overthinking it. Follow the program to an exactness level at which you're comfortable. Some people count fruit in smoothies and some don't.

I don't have smoothies very often, so I don't count it. But, if they were a daily thing, I would. There is science behind their claim, but you do you. Look at your own data and determine if you need to count or not based on how often you have them, how much fruit you use, and how your journey is progressing.

Whole fruit has fiber in it that keeps the calories down. Part of the reason fruit counts in smoothies is it breaks down the fiber & leaves the sugar.

Because when you’re drinking a smoothie you’re not chewing food so you’re probably not going to get as full as you would if your body sensed chewing therefore smoothies are BAD on WW.

But you also don't chew apple sauce. I think that was her question.

I was told that your body breaks it down differently when you drink it rather than eating it whole.

My smoothies are very filling. I use Garden of Life Meal Replacement powder, almond milk, and whatever frozen fruit/veggie blend I’m in the mood for. They’re filling. So I don’t count the points.

The best advice I can give is make it work for you. I lost 50lbs on ww and never counted pts in a smoothie. With that being said I only had one maybe once a week. So it was definitely not an everyday indulgence. To me it satisfied my milkshake craving in a healthier way. You have to use common sense. If you have a smoothie with multiple servings of strawberries, banana, pineapple, cantaloupe, and blueberries. of course that's lots of calories.

I know I’m gonna catch crap for this, but if you go on WW and look this up, they say you should count the points because you won’t be as satiated when you drink a smoothie as if you ate each item separately. So if you’re happy and satisfied with your smoothie, don’t worry about it.
by (820 points)
@thesda I find that I'm actually more satiated with the smoothie than eating each fruit separately but that could also be that I don't use protein powder in my smoothies. I use ff greek yogurt.

This is because the WW leadership are hypocrites, they can say all day it is because this or that, but the truth is do what works for you.

Our leader explained that the amount of fruit you drink and the amount of fruit you would eat at one sitting are very different.

Enjoy the 0SP applesauce! Make your own, it’s easy and delicious. It’s also great on yogurt and oatmeal! The fruit in smoothies is easily digested and less filling. That’s why it has points.
