In reading posts I see that Arlo Pro 3 will record a few seconds before compared to Arlo Pro? Can I use my Arlo Pro base with a Arlo Pro 3 or do I have to buy a new base too? One camera I have could really use the few seconds prior to movement.

You need a new base. I believe you can use your Arlo pro cameras on the pro3 base but not the other way around.

As Paul's link above says, yes you can buy a Pro 3 camera and use it with your VMB4000 Pro base station. Be aware though that to get the 3 seconds of pre-recording you have to have power supplied full time

@chrystel640 the biggest advantage of running off batteries is ease and versatility of placement. You can stick a camera to a fence or a tree or parts of your house you'd struggle to run wires to. The downside is that they can't record all the time or you'd recharge the battery multiple times per day. Hopefully you have configured your cameras well with the highest sensitivity that doesn't give false alerts. Hopefully you've positioned the cameras well so they do detect motion optimally. Hopefully in critical areas you've got multiple cameras with cross triggering. The motion detection is these is so good now, you shouldn't really miss anything

I would really love it if the 3 second foresight and activity zones worked with a solar panel during daylight hours but unfortunately they don't
