Due in June with our first baby and debating between the cloth diapers and regular? Husband isn’t on board, but looking at ways to cut cost and efficiency as well. Is there really a huge cost difference between the two? I’ve read mixed articles/reviews.

I mostly used cloth diapers with my son. Never regretted it! It didn't take that much extra effort. I felt the benefits outweighed the extra laundry. Plus he potty trained very easily and I think cloth diapers helped with that!

I agree! My son potty trained himself before he was 2. I think he just did not like the feeling of peeing in his pants. We also had less diaper rashes as a result.

We love our cloth. The start up can be pricy but worth it in the long run when you’re not spending money on disposables monthly!

We’ve cloth diapered several babies :) I still use disposeables at night because I need sleep and finding a good night time solution is just so hard. I figure 1 diaper in a landfill/day is better than 8-10. We did a trial program when we started from a cloth diaper store to see what style we liked, if any. That’s what sold us on it.

Cloth! I spent $360 on diapers for my newborn born in October and they will last him until he is at least one. THEN the resale market for cloth diapers is HUGE so we should at least pocket 100-150 back once we are done using those with him! I have two under two in cloth and seriously the best thing hands down. It is dedication BUT it’s so worth it. We used a local diaper service first and then after 6 months we went full on cloth on our own and never looked back!

Cloth all the way! You save so much money and they truly aren’t extra work, extra load of laundry every other day. but you avoid having to do the many extra diaper runs to the store! I’d be happy to walk to though our process and give tips if you’d like

I did both with my son. I spent a lot up front on cloth diapers, but I really liked using them. I just didn’t like using them on days when we’d be running around all day because I had to remember a wet bag. There’s not a ton of work in using them. You seriously just take them off, spray them, and wash them. Not hard at all.

I coupon and have never paid out of pocket for diapers and wipes. I’ve actually walked away making money. So for me, disposable diapers are cheaper. Cloth is great, but can be costly when starting out.

I absolutely love cloth and to me it wasnt really that much extra work. Usually equals a couple of extra loads of water but my whole stash (I use alva baby) cost me around $200 (Canadian) that's pretty much 4 boxes of disposable diapers. Now if your planning on sending your child to daycare you'll have to make sure they are on board with cloth because some definitely are not. (Just something to think of) ultimately in my daughter's first year of life we have save hundreds of dollars due to using clothing

I loved cloth diapers and agree with others that it wasn’t that much work, if you have a washing machine in your home. Also, babies are less likely to have diaper rash, are more comfortable, and then toddlers typically toilet train younger than those wearing disposables, which is another great perk.

I used the same $300 worth of diapers for two kids. We never had to run to the store because we needed diapers. Between breastfeeding and diapers, our infants were cheap.

We chose convenience. Pamper Swaddles has a line to show if the baby is wet, so we didn’t have to guess and waste a diaper when changing.

@blanks that doesn’t add up to enough to make them cost as much as disposables.

I cloth diapered both of my kids. Husband wasn't on board at first until I took him to a cloth diaper store and told him to ask all the questions. We slowly started building our stash and successfully had 2 in cloth. I stopped buying disposables when my oldest was 4 months old and never bought another disposable diaper.

I did cloth with my first and wasn’t able to with my second. I cried every time I had to buy disposable because I knew just how much more I was spending  My husband wasn’t on board at first but he got over it. I got into a routine and it wasn’t bad at all

I got most used and the others I got from kawaii. Stay away from Velcro because it tends to fade fast and stick to everything which creates pulls in the fabric etc. I used them most with my first. Post Partum Depression and a tanked thyroid had me suicidal with my second so I just did whatever to survive. I would make sure to use an enzyme detergent. Makes things much easier. They are really are as hard or easy as you make them. And can be as expensive or as cheap as you want to make them.

We don’t use cloth diapers so I can’t speak to them but if you do an amazon registry, after your baby is born. you get a 20% diaper discount on diaper orders for the first year (or up to a certain amount, I don’t remember the number currently). My mother in law threw us a diaper drive shower so everyone brought diapers. My baby is 6 months and we’ve only bought diapers twice (needed more of the size) and still haven’t ran out of what we have!

If we were going out for the whole day and I didn't want to deal with cloth, I didn't. Don't stress yourself out. Again with my first I did it much more and always had a cute wet bag with me. With my second. whatever worked.

A friend used them and loved them, she had a nifty toilet attachment for rinsing BUT the daycares near her would not use them, so they had to switch to disposable for day care and only cloth in weekends/weeknights. She also used disposable for travel

The average child costs $3, 000 for their diapers from birth-potty train. Cloth diapering costs a couple hundred depending on your stock.

Love cloth but its expensive at first because you have to buy everything you need to start. After that it's easy. You can also try out cloth wipes too if you don't want to spend one wipes. I did cloth for 6 months and when I got pregnant again i stopped because I needed a break (I'm also due in June )

What i heard is until you clean a cloth diaper you think it is so great. Then when you have to clean them day in and day out INSTEAD of just throwing them away it gets hard! Also, a baby sleeps better in diapers because it draws the wetness away. If you use cloth be prepared for them not to sleep through the night due to wetness. Have a few diaper showers. Ask for them for birthdays, etc. Me personally, diapers was the ONLY way to go
by (2.8k points)
@pierson65319 Atkins Still a disposable fan.
by (7.8k points)
@abijah1 We never had sleeping issues either. And honestly washing them really isnt that big deal. And technically your supposed to flush solid waste from disposables down the toliet just like with cloth

Personal choice! For me, our life is chaotic enough and I’m not in dire need to save money so disposables just makes our lives easier. If I did do cloth it would be for environmental reasons!

We have cloth diapered all three of our kiddos. I have about 25 AIO diapers, plus some covers and inserts. Now that our youngest is only two, i wash once a week. It's not that much of a hassle and it has saved us thousands of dollars. We spent a total of $500 on diapers for three kids. I put some on my registry so i also received some as gifts.

I’m about half and half right now. Laundry is just basically adding two extra loads to your normal routine (you have to run the washer twice) I’ve definitely already saved a ton on disposables. But since I have two trips to town per month I use them for that since they have a tendency to leak for me. But if you don’t mind spraying poopy diapers (if you breastfeed it’s not necessary until they try solids) and changing a little more often I think they’re great. I stay at home 90% of the month so they’ve really helped me. Even if you just cloth while you’re at home it’s a huge money saver in the long run.

Disposables for me we asked people to bring in diapers and wipes and had boxes for months. We also did Wal-Mart brand rather than pampers since they worked just as well. Cloth just seemed like a hassle that I didn’t want to deal with plus have it be something my mom who watches my kids deal with.

Honestly I’d say wait till you have the baby to make the decision. Get disposable to start with. Because it’s a lot of work and if you end up not being able to keep up with it you’ve already spent money on the cloth and still have to buy disposable. I wanted to cloth diaper so bad, and had a full supply ready with my first. And my biggest issue wasn’t the actual work of the diapers-it was the baby! Lol! My daughter was very high needs-wanted to be held constantly, colicky, and she had reflux and projectile vomited after almost every time I nursed her. I didn’t even have the TIME to launder diapers on top of the laundry from clothes covered in puke. So basically, see what you can do after you meet your baby and do what fits best for your family after you get adjusted. Going full on cloth is a big cost up front so you wanna make sure you can do it.

I always used disposable. I just always bought them in cases at either Amazon or Diapers. com. You can find places like this and still get some pretty great deals. I always used Pampers until they were old enough then switched to Pull UPS.

Definitely saves money to do cloth. We've spent about $60-80/mo on disposable diapers since having our second baby 9 months ago, with a now-2. 5yo not potty trained yet. And that's with 20% off Amazon subscribe and save plus an extra 20% off for having things bought from our registry with them (up to $300 total savings on that. ) I wish I'd spent more time learning about cloth and just tried it. I'm thinking about switching to cloth at least overnight.

Pocket diapers that are adjustable using snaps were our favorites and ended up being what we used exclusively because it is most like a regular diaper. I never rinsed and never had a problem. If you have a front loader and don't have a presoak option, then I would definitely suggest you rinse, etc.

Cutting costs in the long run is definitely a thing but as for efficiency and convenience cloth diapers are not the way to go. It’s a lot more of a learning curve and continues to be throughout your child’s time in diapers. I wanted to cloth diaper but it was so much more convenient to use disposable. So it’s 100% up to you and works best for your lifestyle and family.

I did cloth diapers when I was at home but I did disposable when we were out and about. I only went through a small package of diapers every 1-2 months. I had all my kids back to back so at one time I had 3 kids in diapers. There is a down side. I did wash the diapers every day.

We use cloth diapers by Grovia and love them. There are different kinds and we liked some more than others . Before you buy a ton of one kind only get a few and test them out (once your baby arrives ). Make sure you buy the water sprayer that connects to your toilets . Makes cleaning poop much cleaner and easier !

Cloth diapers all the way! We did a mix with my son in the beginning and switched to cloth full time, my daughter was exclusively cloth diapered. My cousin and I did a price comparison for what she spent on diapers and what I spent on cloth. She was spending anywhere from $1200-1500 a year per kid for diapers (that's not including wipes, diaper creams, etc). She has two kids and both were 3 when potty trained. I'll admit I went a little overboard when buying cloth because they are addictive with their cute print. Probably spent $1000 including getting cloth wipes (never needed diaper creams, cloth has lots of benefits besides being cheaper). You could easily buy a small used stash for a couple hundred dollars. My daughter is mostly potty trained at 2. 5. Baby #2 arrives in April and I dont have to buy any diapers! And when baby #2 is done with them I can sell them! I wash a couple times a week and I honestly never noticed a difference in our utility bills. So from a price point, its totally worth it for us! Plus it's more environmentally friendly and IMO way better for baby! I can share a great cloth FB group with you if your interested! It's a place to start with your research

We loved cloth. We did cloth with boys boys. We managed to stick it out for 2. 5 yrs with the first (but did do diapers at night around 1. 5 yrs for various reasons). We did cloth with #2 but got tired of it after 1 year. We struggled to get our cloth clean. : ( Even with being extremely perfect with the proper detergent and cleaning technique. Just could not get the ammonia and smell out of them. not great for baby's soft areas for long periods of time. As for saving money. yes there is a cost savings and the longer you stick it out, the more you safe. Expect to do laundry every 2 or 3 days at the most. We were lucky to hang dry - summer outside and in the basement in winter. They actually dry fast in the winter (about a day) because the air is dry.

I will second the comment that when i used cloth diapers my son NEVER got a diaper rash, EVER. And another huge benefit was that he potty trained sooner - as they can feel the wetness as opposed to disposable that wick that away. So at 18mo i had a fully trained kiddo. Perhaps i was lucky Also we had a diaper service that picked up dirty/laundered/delivered clean (we lived in a big city . and it was still cheaper than disposable &better for environment) Even if i had to wash them myself these days i would do again.

Regular diapers! U have to wash cloth not only that you have to rinse the poo before u put in washing machine. Way to much work! For my baby shower I asked for diapers and put everyone in a drawer for prizes. I got so many diapers they lasted till 6 months! All different sizes. I would never do cloth and my baby has never had a rash ever. I never even have to use diaper rash cream

I did cloth with my first, and probably washed once or twice a week. Also line dried in the spring and summer. I am self employed so my time was super flexible. With our second, having two small kids and lots of laundry already. I couldn’t keep up as well. I still did them on occasion, but not consistently. I will say our cloth diaper wearer potty trained within a week and was in undies at nighttime at age 3. Our second is still in a pull up at night and would honestly leave it on all day. she’s almost 4. Not sure if cloth has anything to do with it, but I think he recognized being wet waaaaaay before she has.

Oh my gosh. For a first tine mom you will be so tired and already stressed out to then have to worry about cloth diapers also. Cloths at first may give you even more stress due to the clean up hassle. And some of those poops are   . Not to forget the loads of laundry you’ll already have to do all the time. I think for a first time mom, it’s just an unnecessary stress.

I thought about cloth diapers for my second kid. Problem is some daycares don’t allow cloth diaper so that wasn’t going to work. I buy diapers are target and have bought diapers at Aldi which has helped with the cost. I also live in apartment and would have to pay for a sep load for washing, wasn’t a good fit for us, wish we were able to try it though.
