Guys, I am seriously struggling. My last living grandparent just died and I put $2000 on a credit card to go to her funeral. It’s worth it right?

Yes! I didn’t attend two of mine, as I just couldn’t “justify” the cost. Could not regret it more

This would be considered an emergency and you would just need to rebuild your emergency fund. I’m sorry for your loss

Absolutely! My grandparents helped raise me and molded me to the person I am today. Having the time to be with loved ones to say goodbye is worth the money. I miss and think about them every day. Yes, the memories will still be there but I couldn’t imagine not being at their funeral for that closure and last kiss.

Southwest and Delta offer free flights. You have to call and ask for grievance flight. My best friend did it when her mom passed.

@hageman I did not have that experience with SW

@jovial Goeman Really?
by (5.7k points)
@hageman I called for grievance flights and it was 1000+ for multiple airlines, it was cheaper for me to do it online on my own.  is say yes it’s worth it! If you didn’t go, you’d be devastated, especially if you were close!

I tried with Delta when my Father died. They told I had to pay in full then provide them with his death certificate after and they would reimburse me.

@rotarian Wow! We didn’t have that experience. I know what it says. I was hoping possibly she could try it on the way back to save that. It is definitely worth it without a doubt.

@rau7377 She had to get hospital paperwork. We faxed it and they booked her and her daughter right away.
by (520 points)
@rotarian yep. no such thing. not like it used to work years ago.
by (420 points)
@hageman glad they were able to get it worked out. It's a terrible time to be worrying about how to pay for a flight.

Worth it. 1) you can say good bye in person. 2) you’ll see people/family that you most likely will never see slice again. Life happens. 3) others see you snd know that you cared enough to drop everything and come.

Absolutely worth it. My grandmother died when I was living in Japan and I couldn’t afford to go home for her funeral. It’s been over a year and it’s still heartbreaking that I didn’t get to say goodbye.

Even though I'm sure you would rather have spent cash if you could have, it is totally worth it! You would kick yourself if you hadn't due to the lack of closure.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Never weigh money and family. Family always wins. ❤ In 2011, my mother in law died and my husband had to fly to Puerto Rico. I chose to stay behind with our kids and paid for his brother to go. Although she had 20 kids, 15 alive, NONE OF THEM could afford to bury her! I took out money from a 457b retirement savings account and paid for her funeral, 2 flights a rental car and Miscellaneous items. Because it was an emergency, I didn't have to pay back my account. However, that depleted $4000 from savings. Worth the peace of mind that it provided to my Husband!

Sorry for your loss. Yes it is absolutely worth it. These types of situations are what credit cards are used for. Pay it off as soon as you can, but in the end remember it’s just money. The people you love are worth so much more.
