Question, not really budget related but its in regards to the stimulus checks. I was reading up on who and who can't get the check. It mentions that COLLEGE students ages 19-23 will not receive one. I am 23, but I am married (my husband is 27), I do not go to college but I do work full time for the past 5 years. Would I still be eligible or just my husband? **UNANSWERED** Also , my employer is going to be giving me unemployment for this week, I've read that people are getting extra money from this, I live in GA and just want to verify. I typically get 275 if I take taxes out, 330 if I don't.

Anyone over 18 will get one doesn’t matter that you’re married You and your husband will get 2400 if you file together $1200 ea if you file separate As long as your parents are not claiming you and you work and file taxes

@sofia I dont think @katheykathi is arguing the right or wrong she is only providing clarification
by (4.2k points)
@katheykathi I’m aware of the facts. But my point is that this “bail out” is leaving out a large, and often vulnerable, part of the population. Fortunately I will be able to help my daughter out, but as a high school teacher I know many kids who work hard and NEED that money.
by (3.1k points)
@sofia yup, and it sucks  I think anyone in high school should def be eligible for the $500 regardless of age. Luckily unemployment is quite generous for the next 4 months
by (4.2k points)
@katheykathi not for kids who only work summers (aka college kids). No safety net for my girl nor the many many like her.
by (3.1k points)
@sofia yes I agree Sadly many of these young adults will miss out and it’s unfair

Your only disquifilied if your claimed a dependent on someone else return like your parents or elderly that is a dependent on their adult child tax return, or an adult disabled child including 17-26 aged children uf claimed as dependent

If you have a child who is 17-18 (or a college student who you still claim as a dependent) they are not eligible for a check. Not anyone in that age range.
by (2.3k points)
Is that still the case if 18 yo has filed their own tax return?
by (7.5k points)
@shipworm If they were claimed as a dependent on their parents tax return then they won’t get the check. If they weren’t claimed as a dependent then they will.
by (2.3k points)
Ok. We claimed her on our joint return and I know the child credit was only $500 for her this year/beyond the age for the stimulus. She was hoping she would be eligible for the $1, 200, since her 21 yo brother will be, but at least she is considering filing for unemployment, so that may be something for her. Thanks for the clarification:)

As long as you have filed taxes for the past two years you should be fine

Wait, I’m a college student but my parents didn’t claim me as a dependent. Will I still get it?
by (2.9k points)
. Okay, I've seen MANY articles that are saying just that. IF you can be claimed by your parents and are between certain ages or fall within certain criteria to be claimed by someone, you will not get a payment, EVEN if you work full time and filed your own taxes. It doesn't makes sense at all, but I've seen it mentioned a LOT.
by (3.1k points)
@blamable well it’s simply not true. They can’t discriminate on age, it’s all if you have been claimed by your parents or not. If you claimed your kids, no they won’t be eligible. If you didn’t they will. Only you know your filing status.
by (2.9k points)
@katheykathi I really hope you are right!
by (2.3k points)
@blamable I've been reading the same articles and interpreted it the same way. I guess we'll see.

@miniver I hope I'm wrong and she is right!

Regardless of whether they work or not, because you claim them as dependents, they will not get stimulus money.
by (3.1k points)
@editor yes. If they were to work an not be claimed it completely changes it

@madore661 you get whatever percentage of pay GA pays. Plus $300 per week for up to 4 months. You don’t just get unemployment for a week. Apply on EDD your employer doesn’t give it EDD does

That looks like a CA (cali), im in georgia
by (1.7k points)
Our employers always give us the papers to fill it out
by (3.1k points)
@madore661 look up your states unemployment department You can file online
by (1.7k points)
So If I file normally through my employer I wont get the extra?
by (1.7k points)
They usually just give us a paper to fill out , they told us to go in monday to fill out unemployment paperwork
by (4.9k points)
I'm in NV and you have to file for unemployment through the states unemployment site.
by (2.5k points)
@madore661 I have also had a few friends get the unemployment payment and no one has gotten the extra money yet so don’t count on it just yet.

Wait, I'm 19 and part time in college. My husband and I file together. Both of us are considered essential workers so we are still getting paid regularly. What does that mean for me? Will I not get a check?
by (3.1k points)
@donetta49 you will as long as your parents aren’t claiming you which because you’re married they shouldn’t
by (10.9k points)
Guys. if you are filing taxes and your parents do not claim you as a dependent you will get a check.
by (1.5k points)
@katheykathi yeah they don't claim me anymore. This whole stimulus check is getting confusing with all of the different info coming in from everywhere. Thanks guys!
by (1.7k points)
Yeah I feel you! It's super confusing, but I think I got it. Didn't want to put my trust that I'd for sure get a check, but I thinnk I got the clarification that I would.
by (3.1k points)
@donetta49 It’s people on social media confusing people. Listen to your state reps and even the news. If you file taxes, you qualify based on income.
by (1.7k points)
I wasn't really trusting the fake news people share on FB, I was just tryting to do some research etc and I just needed clarification. Lots of false info on people sharing false ads on fb :(

You will get $ 600 per week for 16 weeks added to your regular UI it is up to the states if they want add it to your UI or make a separate payment each week. This will continue until July 31 2020 or you start working again. Hopefully the states do not drag their feet it is going to be available th o the states 4/4 depending on how long it takes them you will be given back pay from 4/4
by (1.7k points)
Okay, so I am only getting this week laid off, I return next week. I can still get it for just this one week if they decide so?
by (3.1k points)
@madore661 no you can’t.

I’m the under impression that anyone with a social security number will be receiving one.
by (3.1k points)
@madrid not if their parents claim them and not if they don’t work.
by (7.3k points)
@katheykathi correct.
by (7.3k points)
@katheykathi the parents get the additional $500 for each child they claimed on their taxes.
by (3.1k points)
@madrid unless they are over 17. Anyone still claimed by a parent over 17-24 will not get anything nor will their parent, these are the ones who ultimately fall through the cracks
by (2k points)
Nikki, I agree. My state is trying to pass a bill to help this age group.

As well as stay at home moms who aren't married
by (1.8k points)
@perorate if you filed your own taxes you would get a check. It is adult kids who’s parents claim but are over 16 that won’t.
by (170 points)
@lest9 right. But I'm a 31 year old stay at home mom. I don't have income to file? So I don't file taxes. Our head of household aka my fiance claims me on his taxes as well as our 4 kids. So I slip through the cracks too?
by (1.8k points)
@perorate no you would be a couple if your fiancé claims you. He would have filed taxes for you essentially. I am a sahm too my husband filed for us jointly. That is why there is a single and a family income minimum.
by (170 points)
@lest9 no we don't file jointly because we are not married. I'm claimed as a dependant on his taxes.

You will not get one if someone can claim you as dependent. So a college student that parents claim them on their taxes will not get one.

by (3.1k points)
@wien50 you guys make over 150k?
by (1.1k points)
by (1.1k points)
Is that the benchmark?
by (3.1k points)
@wien50 yes for married couples it’s $150k for single income $75k
by (3.1k points)
@wien50 if you guys make less than $150k combined you will qualify
by (170 points)
Yup, what nikki said! And then, "Above these thresholds, the payment is reduced by $5 for every $100 in AGI, until eligibility disappears completely for taxpayers with AGI above $198, 000 and $99, 000 for joint and single filers. "
