I use the one through our power company. None of my appliances are under warranty any longer and I didn't extend the basic. With what I have, a repair visit is $25 for the visit. Labor for that, or it they have to return. I have to pay for parts. I usually have someone out within 24 hours, and I've been using this for years. It works for me. I also have it on my HVAC and water heater. You may can find cheaper, it's just ultra-convenient and I've only been dissatisfied once or twice - and once was because the repair man tried to get us to go through his company in the future instead of the power company.

@boyla Dangerfield Barrineau oh wow! I’d like to be able to cover furnace/ac and roof ideally. All the other stuff would be nice but my appliances are new-ish and replaced hot water heater 2 years ago.

@boyla we pay extra for the HVAC but I believe it’s worth it. It’s not a replacement warranty, but a great repair deal.

For me, I found that if I save the same amount as the monthly fee ($75) and 1 deductible per year ($100), I'd have enough to pay for the repairs myself. I don't average $1000 in repairs yearly. ETA: I had American Home Shield when I first bought my house and they were hard to deal with and get repairs out of.

I work for an appliance repair company and the owner does not recommend them. Hard to deal with and not worth the money you pay each month.

We have an option on our Homeowner insurance for this. I have seen a couple peolle use it for furnace etc and has been easy for the client. And good on checkbook.

I have 2-10. I’ve used it for my furnace and central air (which just needed repaired) and now for my water heater (which needs replaced). I paid the $100 deductible when they came out and they are going to replace it at no further expense to me. In my opinion, it is worth the money.

@sandglass what do you pay monthly for the contract?
by (510 points)
@yogi about $61
by (5.2k points)
@sandglass thanks
by (740 points)
@sandglass Just curious do you have semi-annual seasonal maintenance done on your furnace and A/C every year? If not I would recommend it to you and anyone else save on any future major repairs.

We have one through fridigidaire since that’s what appliances we have. It was $50 (total) and we’ve used it a few times. Definitely worth it in our case.

We have American Home Shield and It has gotten us through multiple plumbing leaks and several water heaters. Our house is 20 yes old so I plan on keeping it

I have HMS National. It has been used to repair my freezer, my furnace twice, and replace my gas water heater. All were pretty easy. My house was built in 1954 and the HVAC and water heater were all from the early 90s so I’ve been keeping it.

We have 3 different companies for each of the homes we owned. Bottom line we cancelled and will never have one again. They are ok for small repairs and fixes but for big ticket fixes like HVAC they do bandaid fixes and when the unit needs to be replaced they dont want to cover it, and what portion they do cover is minuscule, you still will owe a LOT out of pocket. These companies work with new small businesses and contact them, so they pay these companies very little for the work they do. So in the summer when your air is out and its 99 degrees in your house it can take days or in our case almost 2 weeks to get someone to you because the contractors prefer to service cash pay customers first. Our experience isnt any different than the thousands of negative reviews on BBB website. We put that monthly fee plus a few "service call fees" in a sinking fund and have been able to fix mist things ourselves, and the things we had to have repaired we were able to choose our contractor or service provider and negotiate pricing. We have actually saved money by not having them. Read better business bureau reviews*

Our power and gas companies both offer plans. We have buried gas lines to our outdoor fire pit and grill and they offer yearly maintenance on our air/heating unit. Our appliances aren't old but we've had to use it once already on our furnace. Absolutely worth it in our case.

We renewed for this 2nd year. We probably won’t renew next year. My husband was to be deployed and have a fear of everything breaking.

@taille that makes total sense. The peace of mind alone would be worth it!

We have First American and have kept it since purchasing home. We got it mainly because we have a pool and spa and those parts and service are expensive. We have had pump, filters on pool replaced. Our built-in-micro replaced, ice maker replaced, washer fixed, etc.

@sandglass Oliveros oh good point! We have a pool also!

Long time ago. had a warranty with Sears for my chest freezer. Had trouble keeping things frozen and after third time of coming out and trying to keep it working they condemned it and brought me a new one. I usually buy some type of warranty on computers when I buy because I've had to use them too much. I do this because it's cheaper on front end than trying to replace when funds are either low or nil! Just me!

My cousin just had the WORST experience with her home warranty. She had a gas leak. They had to turn the gas off during a very cold snap, took them 2 weeks to get there and then told them it would be $2500. She then called an HVAC company and they fixed it for $80.

We have used Total Protect with our last two homes. My husband who is in construction was skeptical of its benefits but we have used several times over that last several years and now he finds the benefit in them. I just had my glass cooktop repaired in our house we have been in for just a year. When we knew it had burner issues we looked at replacing the whole thing but a new one would have been 3x or more what our deductible was to have it repaired.

Daughter and hubby bought an insurance policy to cover repairs on appliances, etc. house stuff. Every time they tried to use it, there was some reason the insurance didn't cover what needed to be done. And, the company was awful when they tried to put in a claim. They were never actually able to get anything paid by the insurance, yet it cost them over $50 per month to buy the insurance. Then, they had a hard time cancelling the insurance.

When we bought our house we asked for one year of American Home Shield included and actually used it twice in the first year. After that was up we continued the coverage. Before we sold the house we used it 4 more times including replacing the well.

We have American Home Shield. They are super easy to use. They have repaired the ice maker on a fridge, fixed Oven door and one of the ignitors on the stove top. Replaced a Thermostate and have been out a few times for A/C. We also had them change out all the locks when we moved in.

I did, definitely don't recommend. We used American Home Warranty. Can't remember the monthly cost something like $58 or $70 ? When my a/c broke I had to pay two separate repair men to tell me it was broken, I filed the claim and they never spoke to me but mailed me a letter saying that they needed more time to settle the claim, in the end I spoke to a person 1 time 2 months after filing the claim, when we hung up they said they would contact me again but never did, in the end I had to finance my own HVAC since I didn't want to have to go thru another 120* summer. Oh, also I was sent to collections for the fee of the repair company they insisted I use, when I had already paid for one.

We used one (we had a year that we got when we purchased the house) to replace our water heater. It was okay. Because we had to go through their people, it took longer than it would have if we'd done it ourselves. So my seven months pregnant self was without hot water for a week. They did handle a lot of the details though which was nice and it was cheaper than if we'd fixed it ourselves. We did end up having to pay about $400 for connecting pieces because apparently our existing unit wasn't up to code. But we didn't actually have to pay for the water heater itself.

I’ve used my home warranty several times for repairs, costs less than it would have without a warranty.

I've kept mine for 15 years with Total Protect and never have had a problem with the company. I live I Florida, #1 fear is no A/C. Total protect has replaced the outside unit 2 times. One summer every single appliance had an issue 1 service call took care of washer, dryer, dishwasher and fridge. although they don't cover the ice maker. Water heater was replaced, the refrigerator and even the ceiling fan in the living room. When doing the math it has almost paid for itself. but when you consider that we didn't have an emergency fund the peace of mind was worth every penny.

@odiliaodille I noticed that Dominion covers one ice maker replacement SCE&G Did not. So I guess I they’ve modified the plan. Sometimes we have a problem with ours freezing up, and one man came out and told us that we are not opening the door enough and making it “act like a freezer” and that’s why it was freezing up. Basically he was telling us that kids opening the door and standing there with it open all the time was much better for the refrigerator freezer. I have never heard anything like that in my life!

We bought one when we bought a townhouse 2 years ago, have kept it up as it’s only $75 if an appliance etc isn’t working. Costs $550 per year, not sure about future years tho
