@iphigeniah $800 is fine if you have a brand, marketing and advertising strategy, well put together eCommerce and creative. Unfortunately all of this costs about $35-40k to do right.
by (450 points)
@catlee8222 I would not waste my time with him, if he states that with $800 you’re good to start on ecom. I can promise you he hasn’t even done his first sale yet, let alone those numbers he says. With $800 you can’t do SHIT guys, Lol.

I started out with 400 quid and now doing six figures
by (440 points)
@oubre Are your 6-7 figure stores one product stores? Did it take you to get to 7 figures from organic traffic or solely paid ads? I'm wondering what I need to do when my ad performance isn't consistent daily.

Pace yourself when spending on ads/testing. Set aside $29 (or whatever the usage fee is for the platform of your choice) times, say, 6 months. Just in case the sales from ads aren't driving profitability right away.

$27 for the active shopify store and then the rest will be dedicated to testing
by (450 points)
@pedigo8 cutting 27 off when it's free for 3 months? Ok dude

You need great creative / ads - then you need a really good looking website/branding (easily done nowadays with shopify and Fiverr) then split test interests at £2 a day each.

If it doesn’t work - it means one of your variables are off - branding, website, UI, Ads, creative, interests . etc.

I started with $500 and lost about $350 a month until I borrowed $2k hired a copy writer for product descriptions and sales pages. Copy is 50% of the battle. Spent $750 on spit testing, $250 on Shopify and theme, $350 on copy writer (not this cheap anymore)and $650 on small $20day split test. Was slow but found what worked over time with targeting Found my working product with just pay shipping offer+ upsells, did $180k in 16months. Then hired adzombies to write ads and scaled to $500/ day. Now still using most of what I started with two years back and did $114k year to date with about a 30% net after cost of goods, logistics(physical products), and fb ads. Getting 2. 0 roas and about 10% signs up for sub $20 continuity selling music. Have. 25k customer list that I am about to do a lot more with. YOU CAN DO IT I could make a ton more front end but I’m choosing to drive a continuity program instead.
by (790 points)
@agustinaah7846 well done which theme?
by (1.1k points)
@pedigo8 I went with porto but have since then switched to Sam cart. I don’t have enough products to justify the store front, it looked bare but I’ll switch back to Shopify soon. Drove $75k of last years rev through that theme on Shopify, with some upsell plugins it does well

Don’t. Do something else. It’s a hard niche that’s even harder right now. $800 isn’t going to take you far you need 10x that to even get started with some level of predictability. Not what you asked but you’ll burn your $800 trying right now.
+23 votes
by (1.2k points)
I am in no way an expert but would advise you to do what I should have done first. Affiliate marketing. Advertise clickbank products. You need very little to start that, you don't have to worry about building a site, shipping times or best selling products. All you do is advertise and get 75% of the sales. And you can make soo much by doing that with little cost.

by (680 points)
If you know how marketing works, if you know how Facebook ads works, if you know how psychology works, if you know how to write copy, if you know how an email list works, if you know how to create simple designs and vectors, if you know how to build a website with shopify, if you know how to do your product research, if you know how to maintain a positive mindset, if you put in the effort each and every single day, if you can shut out the haters, you can do a lot with $800. So I would simply advise you to do research and pick a niche and try to dominate only that niche. You can do it brother don’t let anybody say you can’t, it’s okay to make mistakes. But if you’re a total total total beginner, then I would say you have a lot of homework to do, maybe start by watching wholesale ted on youtube, really good place to start, and live in these forums and groups and don’t be afraid to ask questions
by (570 points)
@flotation thanks for your value bro  I am not a beginner at all The only thing that i haven’t done yet is advertising
by (680 points)
@ekaterina99234 yea bro my pleasure. When it comes to advertising just know what your customer avatar looks like specifically, and then u can just plug that into facebook ads. It’s all about testing too, finding out what works and what doesn’t, ie split testing, just analyze your results and decide. And as far as bigger picture goes, watch some of Gary Vaynerchuk’s videos on youtube, he’s got the secret sauce on how to truly market your product and yourself. I wish you all the luck in the world, you can do it bro just stay laser beam focused

Just to add some actual value though. IF you take the time to actually learn before you start. like months of actual legit learning. then you have a chance. BUT if you even start to spend $1 of that before you have learned. then you might as well set it on fire. because by the time you actually learn the lessons. your money is gone.

by (8.7k points)
Joking aside. Dont listen to anyone's DM. They'll scam you. There are lots of opportunities. -- $80 and run a Kickstarter campaign. $20 for a CAD from upwork, find some to 3D print and run a kickstart campaign -- content creation. 13 year old kids in my neighborhood advertise and do Instagram Stories. FB videos for $300 and these kids do 3-4 videos a week. $1200 for 2 hours of work every saturday. Is very good for middle schoolers. They started on their phones using Adobe Spark post and a bunch of iPad ads and then graduated to After Effects. Heck, $800 can buy a nice DJI drone (the new Mavic Air 2). And you can make money with that doing online fly-through, real estate content. You dont need anyone on FB to give you ideas. You should already have them. No one is gonna hand you something on a platter. And if they did, will you follow through? I can tell you right now, the best online business is a SaaS. Pure sweat and tears and zero capital cost. But you need to put in the effort/time and teach yourself software development. It works for me because it is passive. No inventory, no need to sell. Referrals. It is what I know. Others will be different. Really, if 10 year old kids can sell million dollar apps on the AppStore, then you can too. It is all about how much effort you put in. No easy path.
by (660 points)
Thats an amazing story about the kids making those videos.

Gotta understand what business you’re getting into to even see if it’s viable. What products do you offer? What’s the price point? What sets you apart? What’s the business model? How do you plan to market? What makes your marketing plan different and attractive with your product? Is this something you can also sell offline? After answering those questions and more, ask yourself, do you have realistic expectations when it comes to your budget and the business you’re getting into? What is your skill level? Confidence is one thing, but can you execute? Are you emotionally stable? Do you realize you will have to learn from failures as you go? And those will be costly failures? Most likely though, you will need more money especially if you’re relying on online sales/facebook ads and also selling a product that doesn’t really set you apart nor are you investing in your own inventory! People buy products from brands who have established themselves and have created a message and storyline behind it. Many people see the advantages of drop shipping and private labeling but they should also understand the disadvantages like control of your product, lead times, etc (and that’s just to name a few and you should keep them in mind). People who make special products themselves do just as fine and from what I see, even better. I’ve seen success stories of people selling solely online but understand it took a lot of work, failures, self growth, and money to get there. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
by (660 points)
All in all, this is not a game nor the lottery. This will take time your most valuable asset and it will take a lot of learning which is the plus. Go for it but understand it’s not all glamorous behind the scenes. Most of these people selling you a dream and telling you that it’s all sunshine are not even qualified and do not truly live that life themselves. Get started, learn, preserver, educate yourself, grow, and flourish.

$800 is a relatively low amount to start with, hosting and domain costs and first tests alone can easily add up to that if not more. It costs money to make money like anything else and money will be burned on proper testing. Maybe this is the winner but what if it is not. Plan ahead, always.

@hector I'd not suggest to find team from Facebook pages cuz most of the time you'll end up scammed. With 800 bucks you can start doing affiliate ecomm via dfo agency. find a good product and create a good angle/advertorial and direct link via a fresh and static domain(ask them) you dont need hosting tracking or whatever cost. its better yes but not needed per se.

by (710 points)
I make websites for a living and $800 isn’t enough to build a fully functional, well designed and good UI ecom store. I mean yeah you can use free stuff for themes and plugins but heck you’ll need serious skills to build and put together an ecom site that actually sells. Most clients I take for Ecom developments usually have around 3-5k minimum to build a workable ecom site that’s not shopify or bigcommerce. That’s just for development. You’ll need money for products, fulfilment and returns or refunds. Customer service and a staff you can hire when you’re sleeping and not taking orders yourself. Sourcing suppliers cost money too, and yeah the most neglected part is cost for marketing. Ads and doing social media management is tough if you don’t know what you’re doing. Hiring a SMM would cost around $800 monthly if it was outsourced from Asia.
by (440 points)
Why would you ever want to build an ecom site from scratch ? Even the big brands don't do that anymore Shopify & other (good) alternatives work just fine
by (710 points)
@gogh2951 I don’t know which big brands you’re talking about but all Big brands I know use custom coded ecom shops. Just look at their source codes and see if they use Shopify.
by (440 points)
@supernational Lol dude really ? Kylie Cosmetics, Sephora, Budweiser, Tesla, Triangl, Allbirds, Oreo, Red Bull, Nestlé, Nescafé, Herschel, Frank Body, Tula. The list goes ON AND ON and that's ONLY shopify You find as many big brands using Woocommerce as well I'm a web dev and trust me when I say that in 2020 if you're building an ecom store, a common website or a blog from scratch, it means you don't value your time or your money.
by (520 points)
@gogh2951 what you say may be true but doesnt apply to his situation he is not a big brand with money coming in hes at 0$ no product no nothing shopify will eat up all his profits $ initial invest and ads will eat up all his profits before he even gets a sale. if he's smart enough with a little sweat equity (1week) he can have a fully functional working woocom + wordpress website working better than shopify for 10 dollars a month hosting and 10 dollar domain.
by (440 points)
@whoop78826 Yes that's what I'm saying I was responding to what @supernational said
by (520 points)
@gogh2951 for sure I think the most thing that matters is viability actually knowing people will buy your product and you being able to actually sell at least 5 of them starting small and getting that confirmation then scale up with the profits and buy w. e you need.

Easy man when you've got a winning product and you know what your doing! I launched another store recently that I'm recording the progress over a 30 day period and I only spent $100 of my own money to get it started! Shopify = Free 14 day trial Most other Apps = Free trials The only thing I paid was the domain + the initial Ad spend for the first 2 hours! 2 hours later I was using the money from the Purchases from PayPal to continue to pay for the Ads so the store was in profit/paying for it's self within a couple of hours! This was 14 days ago, I'm currently 9k in profit (Brand new account + new pixel) + a simple free shopify theme! I'm recording this process from start to finish as a case study + for my students, everything from the Ad/website/product optimisation on a daily basis! Along with automating your fulfilment! It's now giving me 6/700 a day profit and it's ready to start scaling!

It’s not that bad if you spend it wisely but you’ll do everything for yourself - Shopify 29$ (Now they have 3 months free lucky you) - domain 9$ - get a logo (do it yourself or use fiverr about 30$) - video ( do it yourself learn how ) - ad copy and product description ( do it yourself) - Shopify apps ( I highly recommend some like hurrify and looks you can get their free days trial so you test products) - the rest spend it on ads ads ads ads - other cost may occur like setting up a company, payment processing if your not from 1 tier countries)
