Hi all!  My daughter and I have our first greenhouse (freestanding one) and we’ve starting sowing our seeds in cell trays.Hi all! My daughter and I have our first greenhouse (freestanding one) and we’ve starting sowing our seeds in cell trays. So far we’ve done spring onions, sweet corn, cucumber, strawberries and cherry tomatoes. I wanted to do garlic Too but I’m struggling to find! The spring onions are already in the greenhouse, the rest are in the airing cupboard to keep them at a good temp until they’re ready to go into the greenhouse. My questions are though; How big of a pot do we need to plant the cucumbers and sweet corn? Can I pot plant ginger and garlic (when I find them! ) or do they need to be planted into the ground like carrots ect. Is there anything else you can thing of we can start sowing now to grow in the greenhouse? Thanks in advance!

I think it’s the wrong time of year for garlic, but you could try growing some bought from the supermarket

Just break up a large clump and plant the individual pieces, I have just checked and saw that you can grow it in February so I would imagine good garden centres would stock it

No need to peel just break into little cloves. x

I got my garlic from Wilko! I used couple of old washing up bowls as planters. Just got few holes drilled in bottom for drainage.

You can buy garlic bulbs from most garden centres If not just get from local greengrocers and break into segments and plant straight in the ground. I usually do mine in November but now is still ok. You can pot plant them if you like. I tend to plant them around my roses as it helps keep green fly away.

Another vote for garlic from the Isle of Wight Garlic Farm! Definitely worth a trip too. It’s amazing! They have a tasting room, cafe, restaurant, garlic farm (obviously) and the most amazing wild flower meadow in the summer.

Generally you plant garlic in late autumn, so not many available just now.

I use a ten inch pot for my cucumbers and my tomatoes don’t think you can grow sweet corn in a pot as it needs to be grown in a block or square of several plants
