Has anyone attached hooks to their french doors to stop them swinging around in the wind? If so, have you drilled into the plastic of the door? How do you know where it’s safe to drill and not reach the glass? Is there another option apart from moving things in front of the doors to act as a door stop?

The glass doesn’t go into the door frame just behind the removable strip around the edge

I have the same problem xx

@ojibwa2289 I’ve bought the hooks and arms but I’m so paranoid about starting to drill, as inside the plastic looks to be glass and metal and I don’t want to leave ugly holes in the doors
by (440 points)
@illuminant I’ve literally brought them and took them back didn’t have the balks to drill them. The bloody dogs have scratched them now though so I could have done. I’ve found some pads from inside a bike helmet I thought of using but no idea how to stick them on. I wonder if there are any hooks and arms that can be stuck on xx

@ojibwa2289 the command strips are meant to be good and strong but not sure how they’d cope against wind and in the rain etc. The eye part could go in the door and the arm could be drilled into the wall.

Look at the magnetic ones someone has posted below! I’m gonna get those!

You could always try the tape that comes with command strips?
by (1.7k points)
@tailstock4 this is exactly what I’ve been thinking but we get a lot of wind and I’m not sure how strong they’d be.

I have 2 planted pots next to my doors i alway use them. There is a bar at the top if you lift this it releases the door and they go right back.
by (1.7k points)
@lobectomy54473 we’ve already taken the bar off with a view to adding hooks. That was a good little find as they go back much further now, but they just won’t stay there!

I have put hooks into the brick work and other bit on the doors. Make sure you drill the holes in the doors smaller than the screws so they are tight. Did mine 3 years ago and still perfect

There you go

@metheglin41863 so the arm is hanging from the door? I definitely don’t want that, as it would bang in the wind. They’re long arms! How do you know where in the plastic is safe and isn’t going to hit glass?
by (380 points)
The glass only comes down as far as the bottom of the beading if you get my drift.

There you go, simple

@metheglin41863 fabulous! Thank you! How long were your screws?
by (380 points)
Can't remember but measure the thickness of the door and make the screws a little shorter.

Search screwfix for upvc hinges
by (1.7k points)
@responsive188 so your hinge locks open?
by (550 points)
@illuminant the friction can be adjusted. I've looked on screwfix, they don't do these. Try you local upvc window/door company

Screwfix. Door restrictor
by (1.7k points)
@responsive188 this is what we took out as it was stopping the door opening fully. It didn’t keep the door open though.

The glass doesn't go into the frame, it just sits behind the beading xx

You don’t need to drill into the door, enough pressure from the screw and screwdriver will be enough to pierce the plastic. Just mark the plastic with a sharpie for your fixings

We have white hooks. think they’re called cabin hooks. didn’t drill used stick on pads. brilliant things no problems and they don’t fall off. Can post a pic if wanted
by (1.7k points)
@flintlock14 I have the hooks already, I just was scared to drilll. Which adhesive pads did you use?
by (420 points)
@illuminant I can’t remember exactly which ones we got but were from B&Q or another diy store. We stuck the hook bit to the door and drilled the latch bit to the brickwork at the edge of the frame

I'm painting it today. My friend had a hinge lock on their door fitted by the manufacturer.

Ours has hinges that when they are open sort of lock themselves open to stop this. Speak to a local window company they might come and fit the hooks for you.
