Oh bugger, can anyone help me? I have put a little weed killer down but seems to have killed the grass but not even touched the weeds. Re-turf or use seeds?

Why weed killer? You need to bend down & pick the weeds out, its not even that big - would've taken 2 minutes
by (1k points)
@gunman622 possibly he's not able to just bend down and pick stuff up like some people can ‍♀️

Was it just regular weed killer or specifically for lawns? General weed killer will kill grass too :(

by (790 points)
Probably don’t put grass seed down for a while as the weedkiller will still be in the soil

If it was glyphosate weed killer like round up you might find it difficult to get the grass back for a while :(

Seeds, roughly 4-6 boxes for that area

Was it glyphosate mate?
by (670 points)
@puisne3 not sure to be honest
by (770 points)
@flatus probably was by looks of it. If so drenching it as much as possible will breakdown the domesticated dosage of glyphosate
by (630 points)
@puisne3 becomes inactive in soil, but must have been stronger than garden centre product.

“A little” Oops. Don’t use weed killer. I dig them out once the dandelions have flowered and put seed down. Covers up in a week or two.

Scarify, lightly sprinkle with compost seed and lightly water. You may have to repeat.

I would give it a bloody good soaking of water first just to neutralise the weed killer. It promises dry weather so it would absorb well.

Wait till October then sow seed. In the meantime, put up with it looking a bit messy. Give it a good raking to drag out the dead stuff. Mow if need be. But please wait till Autumn before seeding or turfing. Weedkiller can last 6 months on the soil.

How much did you bloody use?  I'm trying to kill off a load of grass as I have a bad back and can't dig it up to landscape it so I covered it in weedkiller but it doesn't look half as bad as that and I did mine over a week ago. You need weed and feed for lawns x

It will recover lots of good quality seed a sprinkle of soil And water every day ! Don’t mow for 6 weeks ! As new shoots will be so tender be gentle and repeat new turf can be full of weeds and take ages to bed down. I have a dog and constantly repairing patches drainage and feed and water is all you need oh and patience

Seeds won't grow you have poisoned the ground. You will have to turf it. Add some good top soil to improve the soil.

Recomendations for a lawn full of creeping buttercup?

Any thing that works requires a licence, but you would want a selective herbicide, Envy, praxys all expensive for a small lawn though

Live and learn. Take the old dead grass out, rake up the first cm of soil and chuck some seed down. Cover over with the raked up soil. Water daily for first week and it’ll be back within three/four

Weed killer just doesn’t only kill weeds. It harms everything including wildlife. It should never be used.
by (790 points)
No selective herbicides kill wildlife, Maybe insecticides, you will find the food crops you buy would be sprayed with a selective herbicide to stop weeds establishing in fields

I hate weed killer! Only one way to get rid of weeds, , , pull em up! You'd have to rake all that out before re-turfing

I think save your money if nothing else works, sprinkle some multi purpose compost around, spread it with a rake, seed it (I get mine from home bargains) and then rake it again. We did that when my partner and I did the same thing but it was little spots? Just watch for the birds they love the seeds xx
by (790 points)
Compost is known for holding water in winter and drying out in the summer, would be the worse thing possible, top soil would be correct.

Oh really? Crap, I’ve made a boo boo again in a bald spot in our garden that has large tree roots underneath  what if I water it every evening?

Lawn weedkiller wouldnt do that. Was it a normal weedkiller that kills all growing things? Can only returf as weedkiller will prevent grass seed from germinating

by (5.4k points)
Double dig, get that poison as far down as you can, or loads top soil and reseed or turf, turfing on top of that may not work. big mistake, but weve all done something stupid, i had a slope i had put potatoes in, they were coming on brilliantly, path along the top, i used weed killer in watering can, just drizzled it, , , it rained at night, cpl weeks later, tattie schaws started yellowing all down slope not a tattie left, couldnt grow in it for ages, learned very quickly.

Ok, I have experience as I own my own lawn care business, Easy mistake and done alot, Step one First of all remove the dead grass this will not come back its total kill for a reason, Use a rake or scarifier if you have one. Step two use a hollow core to make hole, or a garden fork, I mean 1 hole per one inch to aerate the lawn. Step three apply abit of washing up liquid to the lawn and water alot. Step four Order 10kg lawn seed for your lawn I would get a shade seed, or a dwarf ryegrass, apply this evenly over the lawn. Step 5 Get 8 bags of tops soil, wicks is a good start cheap enough put in each corner and one in the middle, split remaining bags in the gaps. Step 6 split the bags over the seed and use a rake to rake even, Step 7 Water like hell, twice per day, a good soaking. Hope that helps
by (530 points)
@harbird ho Danny. Really helpful tips. What’s the purpose of washing up liquid? Thanks
by (570 points)
@harbird what does the washing up liquid do?
by (790 points)
@devoted The washing up liquid is a surfactant lowers the surfaces tension, helps water get deeper and breaks down any oils,

What I’d do (if you can afford it) is get a tonne of top soil, level it off and lay brand new turf. Don’t worry about weeds, with regular feeding it will get bushy and glossy and you’ll have hardly any weeds. The ones you do get, just dig up

Never again use these disgusting so called weed killers, it kills every living thing and leaves your soil poisoned, your only option now is to soak it as much as possible and even then poisoning the ground water, maybe after a while you can reseed grass! these chemicals should be banned!
by (790 points)
Using the chemicals with out a licence should be banned, you will find many of the crops you eat would had had herbicides involved, the less weeds in a field the more space for veg

by (1.7k points)
@dimorphous48 don't worry about the black grass that is the weeds dying, that is how it is supposed to work, your grass will come back lush and green it will take @ 2 weeks, water it on an evening.

This is normal, water it and dont be tempted to put anything else on it and just wait. you could put seed on if you really have the need, but best waiting cos you may end up with patch of a different type of grass unless you know what type your grass is. Just let nature do its work x
by (790 points)
Bare patches = More weeds as they establish quicker then grass or Moss in the winter when we get our sudden down pours back to the beginning of the problem

I used this 14 days ago and it has burned the grass not the weeds. I’m hoping my grass will grow back. If not I will be putting grass seed down.

Easy to preach about chemicals if you have a small, well-behaved suburban garden, a good level of fitness and a strong back. I have a big, old, rural garden with at least 6 different types of perennial weeds which I've been battling for 16 years, and I'm not exactly in the first flush of youth. I use chemicals-with care- and if my soil was "poisoned" it wouldn't be full to bursting with flowers, fruit and veg.
by (940 points)
@missionary70285 what about the animals and wildlife it affects?

No weed killer on the grass, cuz will burn all green stuff !. Leave it for few days after heavy rain, or hose for an hour 5 nights, than next week seed it with grass seeds. Tip: weed killer only between slabs and on the edges of the garden and patio, carefully sprayed. Remember weed killer doesent burn only weeds !, but all greens. To maintaining your lawn use "grass feed" kills moss and weeds. Use before rain or simply hose for 30 min after sprinkle granules.
