We have a raised brick bed, built with the house, at the front near the door the surround is wide enough to sit on. We get sun in the front all morning because it's east facing

I have benches out front & back , sun comes over the back until 2-3 ish then stays at the front for a few more hours for us to sit out longer

We have on our road one front garden turned growing vegetables in raised beds. Doesn't look but definitely productive  if you have limited space at the back then why not. We have front garden twice bigger than back and full day sun there too. So we planted hedge and hope to turn it to private garden soon.

Especially at the moment, its a great idea to have a bench in the front garden as long as your front is big enough to socially distance from the path. I think I would wear a fabric washable mask as well. Maybe a serious solution to loneliness.

Of course you should, especially if the sun gets there otherwise it's a waste of good space

I live in Wales where the older folk often sit out the front or stand on the gate to watch the world go by. Its a really nice way to wave hello to passing neighbours and share a "how are you? " X

My drive is at the front with a small garden and it only gets the early sun, usually when I’m still in bed. So it’s not a good idea for me, but if it were better placed I definitely would have a bench.

This is part of our front garden, which is the one we sit out in because we’re on a steep hill, so our back garden is just for the chickens! We’re lucky that we have high hedges and the house is at the end of a track, so we don’t get passing traffic. We have a swinging seat and two Adirondack chairs and a table and chairs on the patio, which isn’t in the picture.

No point having a nice garden if you can’t sit and spend some time admiring it - or looking for another weed to pull out

I now have two benches in my front garden, either side of the garden, which means I can safely chat to our daughter when she drops off our weekly shop.

In the current predicament would be nice so you can see your neighbours and chat but keep your distance, it would also let you know who the idiots are in your area that dont like being told to keep your distance, these are the ones who prolong the stay at home home

I’ve got a bench out front. It gets too hot tho. Got a small parasol if need be

Oops. That was taken when both front windows got smashed They have since been replaced and full shutters !
by (770 points)
Oh gosh @lenticel What happened? Hope your all ok xx garden looks lovely hun
by (970 points)
Yes we are fine. It was a year ago now , spate of wanton vandalism in the area. We weren’t the only ones targeted. Our car and neighbours cars and windows smashed. Couple of culprits caught. Luckily we have CCTV.
by (970 points)
@accommodative We had glass sealed on top of the break. Waited till shutters were in place before we got glass replaced. Come in handy in summer . leave them shut and keeps house cool. X

I couldnt do too much in our fron unless i get a six ft gate to keep arseholes out. We made a snowman in our front garden twice and both times been smashed up. at halloween we go all out for some twats to steal our props so i want a bench and flowers but terrified it would get stolen or ruined. was tempted to get a 6ftgate, remove our side fence so i had a wrap around garden. but being council feller dont wanna stay but dont wanna move. stalemate. im going to attempt a load of foxglove there this year as a test lol. had so many seeds from last years flower the birds kindly dropped. if they survive summer ill consider other plants lol

@epact same here, would love to sit in the morning sun on the front but any bench I put there would ‘disappear’ ☹️

My bench belonged to my late neighbour who I absolutely adored. It's very old and a bit rickety, but it's had a nice paint job and every time I sit on it, it reminds me of him

Moved a camping table and chairs to the front garden. It’s sunnier out the front and allows human communication. We’ve been doing a lot of school work out the front too.

At the moment with social distancing have a bench to sit on in the garden means you can chat to passers bye and have social interaction with distancing safety.

I wouldn't personally but it depends on the location of your home. If you live in a rural community that's different to being on an estate and potentially looking or feeling like your the neighbourhood watch.

Its quite normal in Europe. When I lived in the Netherlands most people had seats out front. Out front was a 15 x 6 concrete slab with a few chairs. Every evening when all the kids were in bed all the parents would sit on their fronts having a cuppa, natter and wind down. It was lovely It was a lot more socialable and neighbourly over there tho. I have lived in 15 different areas in the UK. If i did that in this country i would be called a nosey neighbour and accused of watching everyone  x
by (730 points)
@leshalesher69 we have good neighbours we all chat when our kids was wee now they are grown up kids of there own we still sit in each other’s garden talking wee drink x
by (830 points)
@fruin that sounds lovely. You have a proper community  sadly alot of areas have lost their sense of community nowadays x
by (730 points)
@leshalesher69 yes a could believe that one guy was trying to take his hedge out with a bread knife he didn’t have garden tools social distances it was taken out properly by the other men in street

In our last house, the front got all the sun so we always sat out there. Had a little wooden table for 2, and an egg chair. We loved it, though we had hedges so weren’t too overlooked.

My front garden faces north so never use it always use my lovely south facing garden. Depending on how much sun your front garden gets and how close to the road you are or how overlooked you are.

I think if you'd like a seat out the front, then why not? Quite a few of my neighbours opposite do, as their back gardens are north-facing. It's nice to be able to say hello and give them a wave if we're out the front.

My front garden isn't secure from the road so it's not practical for me to use it with the children - I share path with neighbours both sides so I can't fence it off / gate it safely to contain the children and my dog. It's a grass area with a bush in the middle and hedge at the edge and is very functional rather than pretty or a place to chill. If it can be secured / you don't have children or animals likely to make a bid for freedom / you don't mind feeling "exposed" to your neighbours then crack on and enjoy yourself. For me, personally, I prefer my back garden to chill in.

If i could i would, but any thing i put there gets stolen, so i have only done back garden once i get more cctv up i will get front done give it another try hoping cams will put them of thieving every thing
by (1.7k points)
@seljuk691 the same happened to me till i went to Ability on line and bought a long chain £4. 99 and chained my bench to drain pipe that sickened the thieves from ever trying to take it so there is a way where you can have garden items in your front garden now whenever its sunny i can go out front whilst enjoying seeing my neighbours where i carnt if in back Hope this helps.

I have never sat in my front garden despite getting the sun there in the afternoon, but on VE Day, we put a table and chairs out and had a picnic and it was lovely. A lot of the neighbours chatted as they went by, I liked it so much am thinking of getting a permanent bench out there. I also have a nice view of fields x

I get the sun first thing in the morning in the front garden, and I like to sit outside in my dressing gown with a cup of tea and a couple of cats and just enjoy the start of the day. I bought a plastic bench last year as I didn’t want the bother of painting one. Although I live on a public footpath between two schools and a hospital, it’s actually fairly private. I just sit quietly and no one notices me.

We do - we have a 2 seater with a wee table in middle. but we are down a drive of 3 houses and next to a wall so quite private and we often sit out in evening and chat to our lovely neighbours as we get the evening sun there :) I wouldn't have done it in previous houses that were closer to the street- but others in our area have so each to their own

We ve never had a back garden as such both our houses have had front / side gardens on to the road. Current garden is very very private with 8ft walls around the garden and patio but our old house was very open. Because we wanted some privacy we grew a hedge accross the front of most of the side garden but at times we sat in the front to chat with neighbours etc.
