@shericesheridan69 slug pellets kill everything that ingests them. Not good for wildlife!
by (720 points)
@agapanthus7965 i only put them in my flower pots not on the grass

@shericesheridan69, bless ya, I know that they are an absolute pest. Problem is that anything that eats the slugs/snail's after they've been on the pellets also end up ingesting the poison. My daughter used the break egg shells up and soak them in salt water. it's ruthless and messy to clean the guts up but it works!

@agapanthus7965 never thought of that I will try the salty egg shell thank you

@shericesheridan69 ooooooh, like I say, it's a bit gory to say the least and I hate to think just how painful it must be for them  but it's safer for everything else that may fancy a snack. ready salted slugs. or snail's for that extra tangy crunch!
by (720 points)
@agapanthus7965 ready salted slugs
by (180 points)
@shericesheridan69 disgusting  to be fair, they're really bad for most mammals that eat them due to the parasites that live on them. They cause all sorts of lung and intestinal problems that can be fatal pretty quickly if not treated. A lot of hedgies end up dying of fluke and lung worm due to eating them.

@agapanthus7965 we just normally sling them my husband hates them and loves to give them salt he cleans them up not me
by (180 points)
@shericesheridan69 hahaha, mine usually chops them in half with a spade and slings them for the birds! Bit barbaric but I put that down to Geordie/Hungarian blood!

@agapanthus7965 I just put my hubbies down to being a geordie fullstop

@shericesheridan69 now't wrong with that! We still have family and friends in Newcastle, we usually stay with them a couple of times a year, planned around a match or two at SJP and a bit of primark shopping for me and metro centre exploration with a Wetherspoons pit stop along the way. living our best lives!
by (720 points)
@agapanthus7965 ooh give me primark Northumberland street any time bloody hate the metro centre and Wetherspoons i love cheap and cheerful where in Newcastle do your friends live
by (180 points)
@shericesheridan69 yeah, my sentiment exactly! They live in Fenham and Kenton, we usually go and stay two to three times a year but haven't managed it this year. Missing my Geordie fix!
by (720 points)
@agapanthus7965 aww we just live down the road in newbiggin hall and plenty time next year when all of this shit is over and done with you take care and stay safe and thanks for the tip of salty egg shells x

Put horticultural grit around base of the plants. It's too rough for them to get over. I used to get loads of slugs eating my hosta but haven't had a single 1 yet.
by (330 points)
@uncinus525 where could I get grit from please? B&Q? x

Ive used sports markers and so far not a single slug and i know they have been around as left their trails. if plants too big to go thru hole cut it and peg back together

Agree with @uncinus525 , horticultural grit does the job. I gave also used porridge oats as an alternative

@knightly36615 where can I get the grit from please? B&Q? x
by (440 points)
@deel8083 , possibly but I’d try garden centres too. I was at our B&Q this morning and they had hardly anything like that in their garden section x
by (330 points)
@knightly36615 ah ok, I love that garden centres are open lol! Thanks  x
by (440 points)
@deel8083 , like I say the other alternative is porridge oats to tide you over x

Slugs can lay eggs in the soil in plant pots, which makes it look like copper tape doesn't work, they're already on the inside.
