Home made compost. put all the kitchen waste not cooked food. In a compost bin . shredded paper. Grass cuttings. Not weeds. after a few months it rots down . bit of soil to start it off. youll find it will be full of worms. put it on a slab not direct on soil. Keep doing this each year you'll be surprised how much compost you generate.

Hi @melodiemelodion , May i ask the reason for putting it on a slab instead of directly on the ground ? Thanks

You can get vermin digging their way in.

@ginn5816 I'm talking about a compost bin . and it's easier to spade out when it's ready

I have put 2 bags of top soil on mine during the autumn, & left it to rot in over winter.

Get some top soil and mix it with good quality compost and just sprinkle it on top

My garden was 3 inches of turf and then sand, it was under the sea thousands of years ago, then sand dunes then built on, over fifteen years I've added topsoil, compost, spent growbags. it's quite good now, but still dries out quickly,

Do a soil test. Think garden centres sell them. It sounds like you might have clay soil, which retains water, hence rotting plants. If it is clay, it needs mixing with a sand type thing. Others might know more.
