I am so jealous of all the lovely gardens on here. Mine is a mess. My dog has dug holes that are so big we lose our cat down them. We have hardly any grass left either. Garden is long and narrow and only catches the afternoon sun in one part. One side is fenced the other has a stone clad wall that I hate ( a long line of garages so cant do much with it ) How do you all make your gardens so nice on a budget? It would cost a fortune to buy fake grass due to the length but wanting somewhere pleasant to sit out and and somewhere the kiddies would love to play in and that the dog wont destroy. I actually hate looking or going into my garden.

Ours was horrendous but we didn’t have the money to do it properly so we bought some cheap fake grass and laid it ourselves but couldn’t do all the garden without it costing a fortune so we sectioned the bottom half of and made it into a play area with the rubber play bark for our 3 year old, it’s not fantastic but it’s a lot better than before  x

You could dig it up and put pebbles down or put pallet decking over it x

Could you fence off the sunnier part that you want to sit in, so it's a dog-free zone? Perhaps even screen off the rest of the garden so the rest of it doesn't stress you out while you sit there lol. The clad wall could be made nice with some climbers and/or trellis x

To fix the grass fast try doing a lawn of creeping jenny/thyme or any creeper. Just pull up grass and lay seeds and loads of small plug plants. they will spread rapid You could section area off with wee white fence and wood chip for dog. Then cut into the ground two edged boarders fill with plants and herbs etc to get kids involved. you can have table on creeping area by laying a few slabs while sowing lawn as its soft underfoot and smells beautiful when stood on. Most material u will pick up free on market place etc x

You have to be disciplined and take charge. Don't let the dog have free movement over the whole garden

My entire lawn came from freecycle - when I moved in it was shingle and rocks - I put out requests for people’s left over turf and over a couple of months managed to turf all of this (there was previously no grass at all). A lot of plants have also been gifted or via freecycle. Always worth an ask xx

The paving stones were a job lot I picked up for £30. (I did have to pay someone to lay them though). I’ve just painted the fences using wilkos own Dark Smoke and love it (very cheap just laborious lol).

And I’m in the middle of painting the garage with some inexpensive masonry paint and using the left over fence paint to rejuvenate the decking squares

It can be done I promise - keep the faith and ask about for bits that people no longer need, also people are usually very happy to donate cuttings xx

I'd firstly section off a dog play area with toys and things to dig and play with. Then a dog toilet area which will need to be within easy access with less mess being brought into house in winter months. Then kiddo safe zone area with lots of colour and things to do. then an entertainment area/chill area for the adults. A long garden can work very well with some thought. Good luck x

We had to section of both parts of our garden. rescued a dog a year ago not told much about him but turned out he loved to dig and we r the corner house so marsh lands and duel carraige way other side of fence. we lost him 4 times due to how big the holes were he dug. his a bull lurcher lol. so for his safty and to keep my main part of garden in tack as he loved to dig all plants and eat them we had to section it all of. yes he only has the concrete as u can see but at the bottom is also a 10ft by 10ft square of patio that he loves and also up this end as u can see he has his own shelter for if he gets to hot. even tho he loves to lay in the sun. now we can keep bk door open and let him run in and out without losin him. also it was all done on a budget very cheap one. he only comes in main part with the grass when we r sittin out there so he can be watched x

Fake grass is overated, grass feed and water it cut it weekly. Think what do you want from your garden , maybe a patio area in the sunny spot, try to spend a little each week. on plants , containers with colourful flowers , pansies , primroses, geraniums, will add colour , maybe hanging from the wall you don't like, buy climbers for the wall long term , overall do a little each week.

If it's long and narrow, consider breaking it up into sections. I have made willow trellis in mine to cut off certain parts of the garden(Just by sticking willow canes at an angle). Have a look on Pintrest for ideas. Think about upcycling things that people want to get rid of. The only thing I have spent money on is Cuprinol paint for fence and furniture. Pintrest gave me so many ideas. Good luck.
