The problem is, if one leaf touches the fence, they have a way onto the plant. Porridge oats around the pot works because they will scoff that, not the plant!

Copper tape worked great on my pots. Make sure that they can't 'parachute' in from nearby plants.

Somebody here said that vaseline around the top of the plant pot works as it stops them being able to grip but I haven't tried it myself yet.

@liability it has worked for me I just move them off the ground before I go in on a night. It means I only have two in planters but at least they get chance to grow. Good luck with yours

Organic slug pellets.

There are a few ways to stop slugs eating your hostas. You can surround them with a ring of crushed eggshells, which are too sharp for the slugs to crawl over. You can bury beer traps too. Fill some small containers with beer and bury them in the soil, so they are level with the surface. Slugs are attracted to the smell, and crawl in and drown. Most gardeners swear by going out in the garden in the evening, just after it gets dark, with a flashlight. Pick off all the slugs you can find and dispose of them. The best way to keep hostas safe is to employ more than one of these methods, alongside your usual slug pellets too

I found the copper tape really good, just make sure no growth is near edge of pot that they can climb onto, no neighbouring shrubs to climb up/ onto protected plant.

Last year I got some stuff in a tube from Wilko. Looks a bit like toothpaste. Because I have dogs and cats was unable to use the pellets. This is pet friendly. A few still get through but prevents a lot of the damage.

You need a wide strip of the tape. I used to have chickens and used a product called diatom powder to deal with mites. Discovered it worked well with slugs as it dehydrated them but no good once it's wet. When I had a pond I had a fibreglass stream that split in two in the middle. I planted the hostas on the island slug free.

Sprinkle garlic granules on the top of the soil or plant some wild garlic plants around your hostas the scent will keep them away xx
