They can live outside through the spring and summer. If soft edge it's Christmas if sharp it's Easter.

It’s the only plant I’ve not killed it’s in my bathroom and it seems to flower more than once a year I don’t water it very often  at times I’ve thought it was dead and was tempted to throw it away ! I’ve never repotted it but I think I may do after it stops flowering x

@milkandwater seems mine is a Thanksgiving cactus despite being sold as a christmas cactus, I guess it's not marketable in the uk
by (1k points)
@victoriavictorian most are sold incorrectly as Christmas ones x my mum always believed hers to be a Christmas one too

Once the flowers go put outside but bring back in before the winter once you bring it in put it somewhere it’s going to stay as they don’t like being moved once they start to get buds on them x

A beautiful Christmas cactus, I bought one on christmas eve and was surprised when I came down stairs the other day and saw it had flowered. Apparently they dont flower if they get sun in the evening. I can verify this is true I moved it from the back kitchen window to front lounge window and low and behold this is what appeared
by (1.2k points)
@victoriavictorian yes mine is in my bathroom and it has the sun in the morning and then dark in the afternoon/evening, I’ve just read it like humidity so bathroom with the shower must be perfect for it x

Can anyone tell me the secret to growing these? I’ve killed a few over the years and I’m left with an off shoot that isn’t dead yet! But it never seems to grow! It flowered last year but not this year. What am I doing wrong?
by (1.2k points)
@joppa8 I’ve just read it likes warm humid places and water as little as possible mine has never moved from the bathroom window and it flowers at least twice a year x
by (1k points)
@vertu1830 thank you, how much direct sunlight do you think it needs? i moved it from the kitchen window to the living room window a few months ago, but no harm trying the bathroom!
by (1.2k points)
@joppa8 I get the sun in the morning in the bathroom then the sun moves onto the other side of the house so mine only gets a few hours a day xx
by (900 points)
Mine is in the dining room window. It gets sun during the afternoon, and water about once a fortnight if its lucky. Mine flowered at Christmas and is just flowering again. They must thrive on neglect because most houseplants come here to die.

I have two Christmas cacti which I inherited from my grandmother and my great aunt aunt. I think they must be at least 50 years old! They need very occasional watering and not to stand in water. Very occasional feed, very occasional change of top inch or so of compost. (Mine are too big to re-pot. ) I think the photo is of the Easter version - I have one which is about 15 years old now and it gets the same care as the Christmas ones. Mine don’t like direct sunlight but they do like good indirect light.
