Anyone have a good tip for completely excluding, or segmenting traffic from Mobile Apps? For display and video. Google keeps making it harder to exclude this traffic and it's been driving me nuts

You see the dates on those Screenshots you've so conveniently shared? Early 2019. It's changed twice since then

@goulden No. It's NOT changed twice since then.

@tussle4 I've done this at the MCC level but my ads still show on mobile apps anyway. Is this happening to you guys at all? Despite excluding all apps?
by (7.5k points)
@goulden i didnt know u could do it on MCC, i always just do it in the actual account andni never have that issue
by (7.5k points)
@goulden how do you navigate to exclude apps from MCC?
by (1.8k points)
Go to your MCC Tools & settings Placement exclusion lists

There was an extra step to apply it to all child accounts. Can't remember what that was off the top of my head

Actually yes, just recently I'm noticing some apps are getting through even though I've excluded every single mobile app category. Then when I use the Placement window to checkbox and click Exclude, I'm given an error stating "No such app exists"

Only way is to exclude the app categories unfortunately, Google are moving towards automation more and more and won't be surprised if this option is gone before long. To speed it up you can add all the exclusions at once in editor though.

@goulden it can be only one app: Gmail
by (16.1k points)
@goulden and you have to apply them at campaign level, not at MCC or account level.
by (1.8k points)
The MCC placement exclusion list is being applied to all campaigns. Does that not work?
by (16.1k points)
@goulden Yes. It doesn't work. Campaign level. As shown on the the screenshot above.
by (16.1k points)
@goulden It's not possible to apply TOP 3 categories in a placement exclusion list. Only 141 subcategories.

I have a list of popular placements in a shell. It's still an extra step I'd rather not need to do. Has anyone tried a script that automatically excludes placements with "Mobile App:" in the placement name?

Ideally I'd like to take these mobile app placements out and bid on these in separate campaigns
by (1.5k points)
You have to exclude by category. There's about 80 so its a real pain and yes Google absolutely does this on purpose. I almost always exclude all mobile apps from campaigns.

Repost: use adwords editor, or just exclude the placement - mobileappcategory::69500 ( All apps ) mobileappcategory::61001 ( All Windows Phone Apps ) mobileappcategory::60500 ( All Apple App Store apps ) mobileappcategory::60000 ( All Google Play apps )
by (1.8k points)
Does this successfully block all of them for you?
by (8.7k points)
@goulden yeap it works. only thing i wish for is something similar for youtube channels, where ppl can block all kids related channels by default. currently have to add manually.

@proctology why you repost? He doesn't want to search! He would find EXACTLY your previous post IF he searches.
by (1.8k points)
@proctology it's interesting because even with this implemented, I still get plenty of mobile app placements. They're applied at the campaign level through my MCC list. @raynell9/activity" class="qa-user-link">raynell9 has explained they need to applied at the campaign level, and NOT through the MCC or Account placement lists. I don't understand how that makes a difference since the placement exclusions get applied at the campaign level either way. @raynell9/activity" class="qa-user-link">raynell9 also messaged me privately to tell me he thinks I'm cute. Not really sure what's going on with that guy to be honest
by (8.7k points)
@goulden not all things are real time, you need to add it correctly then just let it run. its works for me, so im sure it can work for anyone. i added it at campaign level.
by (1.8k points)
Thanks for the insight @proctology
by (16.1k points)
@goulden What is wrong with you ? 1. I told you to search the group. You didn't. 2. I told you that the information is correct in the old posts. 3. I reposted what @proctology said 4. I told you THAT YOU CANT ADD THE ROOT APPS in a negative placement list, so IT MUST be done at campaign level
by (1.8k points)
@raynell9 what are you talking about? My negative placement list has everything in it. Including the placements @proctology just shared. I'd imagine that's what you mean by "root apps"? Why would they need to be added AGAIN at the campaign level?
by (1.8k points)
The concern is that I already did this, and it's not excluding all of the mobile apps. I'm asking if anyone else is having a similar issue. This process for excluding mobile app traffic has changed several times over the last two years. It used to be a URL that was excluded, then a negative topic, then a campaign setting. I see you're a moderator in this group. What is your problem with me asking a question and starting a discussion here?
by (16.1k points)
@goulden "This process for excluding mobile app traffic has changed several times over the last two years" - it hasn't been changed since September 2018 as I told you

@goulden Same thing posted by the same person (@proctology) here:
