From a security professional perspective, I can make the argument either way. But the why, could be justified with the fact that you get better security in the terms of version management and patching. These businesses stay on top of cve's and bug reports and issue security patches pretty quickly. They also push these patches to the devices. End users are not always as reliable. Too many times have I gone to a client to find outdated firmware on their devices. Also, every DIY community forum on the internet is chalk full of people trying to fix things they've bricked or broken themselves. Don't get me wrong, I still prefer local control of my devices, but I do this stuff for a living. Most end users do not. So, from a security and reliability (I repeat myself) perspective, cloud based security cameras have a decent argument to be made on their behalf. Another security perspective has to do with environmental controls. I live in northern alabama where we get a lot of tornados and whatnot. Off site storage is a common security practice for many businesses, and makes sense for the home owner as well. A house fire or tornado or flood (kids suck) can cause a total loss of equipment leaving footage unrecoverable. Cloud storage is a way to bypass that. The insurance argument has already been made above, I see. Anyways, just some food for thought. While I prefer local control, I can see that the argument for cloud support isn't always a dumb one.
