Currently, I use door openers in my car (like the old days) to open and close the two garage doors. 2 remotes. I keep them in my car which is parked outside. Then I thought it would be easy for someone to break the car window and use the remotes to open the garage door and come inside. So I wanted to somehow disable the remote once I go to bed. Thought about smart plug for the door motor or installing different wall control unit, etc. then the topic of MyQ came up so here I am. My house is configured for Alexa and SmartThings.

@colbycolbye why not bring both old school remotes in your house for safe keeping and download the MyQ app on your phone and just use that to open and close your doors when you are in your car? Do you own the MyQ unit already?

No. I just ordered it yesterday. But then someone said managing the MyQ via SmartThings instead of Alexa is much better.

Im just trying to understand the differnce between SmartThings and the stand along MyQ set up with Alexa.

Would start with what you would like it to do?

It really depends on what you want to accomplish. But you're not limited to one or the other.

Why limit it to either or? Just like lights, switches, and plugs, ST and Alexa both can control the device.

Example of Smarthings. Use phone as presence sensor, set geofence around house, when your phone enters geofence garage door opens (if closed).

@likelihood Not a great idea for someone who might have a tendency to drive close by their house.

If you run the myq through Smarthings, you will need a multi sensor and set it up as a tilt sensor. Then install the custom device handler. The myq is rather annoying when closing. It has a loud beeping sound before it closes letting people it's about to close. I wish I would have left my other setup in place instead of switching to the myq

@colbycolbye using a control relay and a smart plug.
