Hi all!  I gained 1.Hi all! I gained 1. 2 this week. I had abdominal surgery Wednesday and feel constipated. Do you think this gain could be surgery related?

Yes. Getting IV fluids, taking pain pills causes constipation

Yes! Often after a a very short period of not using the bathroom, I finally will and the scale will drop drastically. Who knew poop weighs so much? ‍♀️

Call your doctor, if you had surgery the doctor needs to know what is going on. If you are taking pain meds they definitely cause constipation and doctor needs to know.

@renewal no pain meds, only tylenol

Sometimes unconsciously you are scared to go or to push after surgery I'd try 4oz warm prune juice it will clear you out with little to no pushing then I'd start a stool softener. Best of luck! #justanurse

Yes! Surgery causes water retention.

Anesthesia slows down your bowels a lot! Drink lots of fluids and take some stool softeners. You may also have some swelling after surgery. Take it easy for a week or two.

I would say it is definitely surgery related. They pump you full of fluids, your electrolytes get out of balance a d you tend to move less. You will catch up. The bloating is because the fill you up with air so the camera can see better because everything isnt squished together

When I had my appendix out and then had a bad reaction to a medication and couldn’t keep anything down for two days I was sure I would lose weight. Nope gained. I was told that surgery will do that, it’s temporary.

Yes, a lot of IV fluid is given during surgery. It takes time to eliminate it

I posted earlier but please call your doctor. Constipation can be an after effect caused by the anesthetic during the surgery and by pain meds afterwards. You need to know from the doctor what your system can handle, you do not want to take anything that could cause problems. A phone call is quick and easy and you will know for sure.

I had bowel surgery last summer. My dr tells me to take miralax and that everyone should drink benefiber everyday it’s tasteless not thick I put a tablespoon in my coffee. But miralax is a good preventative for constipation.

Absolutely surgery related. Not just the constipation but they blow your abdominal cavity up with air to separate organs so they can see better. Give it a little time & you’ll be fine

Did you have laparoscopic surgery? I know after mine I had to pass all that air out of my body that they pumped in. I started taking a stool softener immediately also.

You should call the doctor. Once upon a time they wouldn’t let you go home until they were sure bowels were working That being said - any surgery is a trauma to the body and anesthesia is designed to mess with normal body functions. Don’t read anything into a gain. Your body’s job right now is to heal. It can take a couple weeks to get back to normal
