Hey everyone!  Looking for some advice.Hey everyone! Looking for some advice. Has anyone been on WW with severe gout? My husband has it so bad he can hardly walk. I was a WW member for years but with all the plan changes I decided to try keto. It’s working. but honestly not any faster than WW. But now that I’m cooking keto, it’s all full fat dairy and thats making my husband worse. So if we make the switch back I’m thinking probably the purple plan for him? We can’t be eating different diets. I just can’t cook like that. Thanks!

Apple cider vinegar for gout
by (280 points)
@ribeiro53 we’ve tried apple cider vinegar, tart cherry, indomethacin, Three rounds of steroid shots with oral steroids to follow. We’ve done alllllll the things. We’re on to diet now. Nothing helped

@readability has he been tested for anything else?
by (280 points)
@ribeiro53 he’s had an x ray of it. It’s definitely gout. He’s had all the blood work. His knee is the size of a basketball, red, hot to touch, sooooo much swelling. Now it’s moving into his foot also

@readability i went misdiagnosed with it for yrs. Ended up being my heart and having a triple bypass. I did acv for a yr and the swelling went away at night and would come right back. Since my bypass I've had zero issues.

I AM NOT A DOCTOR! It is my understanding there are many things that cause gout. (I get it. I take meds to prevent it. ) Beef, asparagus, shell fish, etc. But the bottom line, I believe it is from RICH foods! Keto does full fats? I know nothing about keto. All I know is, I missed a wonderful seminar trip with my husband because my gout was so painful that I used crutches to walk. Just a side bar. it is a form of arthritis. Hope he has seen a doctor. P. S. I know my foot pain is gout if I lightly pull a sheet across my foot and I want to jump out of my skin! Very painful. Sympathize with him.

@examination thanks! We’re trying to get in to a rheumatologist but the wait is until around April

@readability nosy here. Call and asked to be called if there is a cancellation. Hopefully, they won’t have a long waiting list for this. Best to you and your husband.

I think blue would be easier to work with, a little more flexibility than purple ‍♀️

Just a quick comment about the gout - my friend had it so bad he could barely walk. He's changed his diet to all poultry/fish and veggies and healthy fats -- no dairy, no grains, no beans, no shellfish, no beef, minimal fruit, no alcohol -- and he feels incredible.

I would think you’d be able to do chicken or fish for your protein and vegetables. That would work for hubby and you if your on blue. If you want to add some butter to your meal you could to get some fats in. Maybe do this until his gout is gone and then slowly add in other foods once a week.

Keto can cause gout with all the high fats and red meats.

@sunshine true, but sugar seems to be his biggest trigger. So we’ve been trying everything ‍♀️ and I don’t necessarily think it’s KETO that’s bad for him, I think it’s the way he’s doing it. He could snack on veggies and eat more or a variety, but he usually ends up with cheese and meat. I guess what triggers it is different for everyone. We just can’t nail down the right diet

Does an anti-inflammatory diet help with gout?

Is he on Allopurinol?
by (280 points)
@insectivore no, bc we want to exhaust everything else first. Once you start taking it you usually need to take it forever

@insectivore I took allopurinol every day for a couple of weeks and started WW and quit the meds. I have been in the hospital with gout. It is hard in your kidneys. Bad stuff.

Keto is not a good or sustainable diet. WW has been named the best weight loss program for ten years in a row. What kinds of food does your doctor say your husband can't eat. Use that as your guide as to what you make him. Stick to lots of veggies and chicken etc and he will lose weight. I'm sorry he's in such pain.

@divide we tried keto bc sugar is a big one for him. If he eats too much it’s a guaranteed attack. Beer never seemed to do it and that’s also a big one. We just can’t pin point what’s doing it. We were thinking about trying everlywell food sensitivity test but idk if that will show what’s doing it

Gout is definitely influenced by diet. Your doctor or a dietician can advise you fully, but you’ll need to have less fat and meat in the house for sure. Stay away from Keto.

My husband has been on allopurinol for the past 17 years and it has completely prevented gout. It is an inexpensive drug and he has had no side effects. He is 80 now.

I can understand exhausting all options but for me Alpurinol was the only thing to drop my uric acid level which causes gout.

@groggery I agree. I tried the tart cherry juice forever, keeping away from problem foods but only allopurinol Tom care of the problem

Incorporate black or sour cherry juice for him into whatever diet you do
