The only SSRI that helped me lose weight was Wellbutrin.
by (2.8k points)
@tympanites welbrutin was too stimulating for me
by (1.7k points)
@prowler me too. I got off of it a month ago and I’m putting weight back on. Lexapro is the worst tho. I gained 80 lbs when I took it.
by (2.8k points)
@tympanites yup! I gained about 30 (which I know a good amount of it was my diet) and I was always hungry! But lately I’m really struggling mentally

by (1.6k points)

@award pcos? Polycystic ovarian syndrome. Weightloss is an issue because a pcos symptom is insulin resistance. The metformin helps with that.

I take Zoloft! Has not hurt my results. I also have pcos and an insulin resistance. Every darn odd was against me, and probably why I spent 20 years overweight and depressed. But got sick of that and said NO! No more! No more excuses. Even if it is slow weight loss. I will lose weight! I have! I have kept it off. I will continue to persevere. You can do it too! Nothing will stop you when you are ready! You got this! ❤️

by (2.8k points)
@boreas prozac didn’t work for me, gave me heart palpitations
by (11.5k points)
Wellbutrin has no weight gain properties but you have to weigh what's most important because your mental health hasta come Hurst a lot of the weight gain comes from the Hunger that some of these meds cause you're not going to gain ton of weight and if you notice that you're gaining weight from these medications alter your eating see a nutritionist and dietitian because if it is wig working for your mental health you don't want to stop taking it without careful guidance from doctors
by (690 points)
@prowler did you try cutting the dose? I'm on 20mg, tried going to 40 had heart palpitations, went back down haven't had any problems!

I've been on Prozac since I was in 4th grade and I'm 22 now. I gained weight even though the side effect is weight loss, but I didn't gain weight until I was a senior in high school so I think it's due to my birth control and not playing sports anymore, not the Prozac. but who knows. Anyways I've lost 20lbs, SSRI doesn't seem to affect my weight loss. Good luck!

Out of all the SSRIs Paroxetine has the most significant profile for weight gain. The others not as much. You can ask your provider to switch you to a SNRI or Wellbutrin if weight gain is bothersome. Bottom line, have this conversation with your medical provider. They can help you find which medication is right for your circumstances.

? Is losing weight because your depressed and have no appetite/ and or a side effect of the med. I have been on anti depressants and I don’t have an appetite because of depression , gradually I’d eat because I’d start to feel better. They are not weight loss pills.
by (2.8k points)
@hedwig I know they’re not weight loss pills. A lot of people gain weight on SSRIS because they increase your appetite
by (5.5k points)

by (3.2k points)
@meet21 Really it is not! You CAN! Even a tiny bit at a time. I first lost only 25lbs my first yr. I was happy with that. I then REALLY got crazy and lost the rest faster. but you can lose slow. Anything is better than nothing. As I started earlier I have pcos, pseudo tumor cerebri, an insulin resistance and depression. Like you after 20 yrs decided I was going to be fat forever. I yo yo dieted always. but I finally did it! I am thin. 130lbs. I feel great. My insulin is down to 2. my fluids in my head are gone! My hormone levels are great without taking meds! I still take my anti depressants. but my neurologist says they also help keep my sleep in schedule and help with anxiety and stress. so I stay in them. I am proof though if I can do it anyone can!
by (8.9k points)

Yes! I have been on SSRIs for years. Now on SNRI which is the same in terms of making weight loss a bit harder. You absolutely can do it whilst on them. You are more likely to maintain your loss if it is slow and steady anyway. I promise you it will work though. I would advise keeping an eye on carbs - they also increase seratonin which is why it is so common for people with depression to eat more carbs. This blew my mind when I found it out and made so much sense. I would recommend green programme to start off with as involves counting everything whereas some starchy foods are free on blue and purple. I have lost around a stone (4 kilos I think) now since joining in February. Be patient as it may take a few weeks for your metabolism to adjust and to see the weight coming down. You can do it! Good luck. X
