*** NEED ADVICE*** I recently got a job at a grocery store and then today I got a job at target. They pay similarly and I would want both jobs. How do I tell both bosses about the other job?

Be honest, explain that you really need both jobs. Know your WHY.

Maybe work 3 days at one and 3 days at the other with a day off or work days at one and evenings at the other?

Just be honest. Open and clear communication is essential. Find out when they produce schedules or work out a fixed schedule with both. When I had two jobs, one job made their schedule two weeks ahead and the other one week ahead. I would bring the schedule from the first job to the one who scheduled one week ahead and they would work with that.

@almshouse437 this is exactly what I did as well working 2 jobs

Be upfront with both of them, let them know you are available nights one and mornings for the other

Do you have to tell them? If you do, just say you will be working both jobs and make sure they know what days you are available at both.

@sugihara this. I’d simply say “unavailable” when working my other job.

Check your employment contract. Mine says I must disclose other work, and that it cannot interfere with my main employment.

What is your first job? Work your hours around the first job.

@parenthesize I haven’t started either yet so I have a opportunity to tell them which is nice

I have almost always had 2 jobs (currently juggling 3 pt positions). If the jobs were shift work, I was very upfront with my bosses and was able to work out a schedule. I only had one boss in all those years who was problematic and told me it was his way or the highway. so I quit. A month later he called me and offered me the position back with a bit of increased pay.

Just put your availability as x on one and x on the other . most people work 2 even 3 jobs (so sad right ) but it's life now

It’s a conflict and not likely they will allow it as you are working for a competitor. They both sell groceries. It would be different if one was a an appliance or clothing store.

@asti87 Blake I wouldn’t view it as a direct competitor. target isn’t known for groceries if it was target and Walmart I’d see that, but I see what you are saying.

@manson135 I Would be suprised if your employers thought the same. My husband works for a for a grocery store and would be let go if he worked for target-but they would be okay with say HomeDepot or JCPenneys, etc. Either way be upfront with them about the work so there are no surprises and I would get it in writing.

I worked in HR in a grocery store. I did all the hiring and the conpany would not allow you to work at any other employer who sells groceries at all. Did not matter if they where known for it or not.

I would be more concerned about conflict of interest. Find out your HR policies first

Let the target job know they are your second job, let the first job know you got a second job. Make schedule out for first job, then submit schedule for second job. They don’t have to know where the other job is unless you signed a no compete clause

Walmart workers have to sign a non-compete agreement, you cannot work for both stores. Make sure you didn't sign something like that at Target before you tell them anything. I know people who've lost jobs because of this.

Target writes their schedules two weeks out. If you were hired on with open availability, they will want to schedule you as such. I worked for Target for 10. 5 years with my remaining half in HR doing the schedules and payroll. Target wants to be your first priority and another job to be the 2nd. As others have mentioned, they worked for Target and Target doesn't schedule very many hours. I saw that first hand, they want to be the priority but don't want to schedule the hours but want you to be available to come in asap if they have a call out.

I would make a set schedule for each job. So essentially one job mornings and the other nights.

I wouldn’t mention it at all, it’s not their business what you do on off hours.

Did you tell them both you had open availability during your interview? If you did and now change it they can terminate employment if they expected you to be available and now your not. Talk to them, let them know your considering a second job to help pay the bills. See what hours they each need you for and try to work it that way.

I worked at Target, my management staff was great and worked with my availability. even when the computer made mistakes in the schedule they would handle it. Be honest and explain to them. Since neither offer full time they understand the need for two jobs.

It’s probably a conflict and you will lose your job at Target. 100% if there is a super target in the area. My husband has worked for Target for quite awhile. He works at the distribution center which is great but the stores are a bit notorious for under scheduling people.

Is there grocery store a chain or a small business? The way large corps cut hours and have so many employees, I would go with the grocery store if it's privately owned. Fewer employees means they will need to cover everything.
