Real grass versus false grass? Especially if you have a dog? Feel? Smell? Look? Any one regret getting false grass?

Although I have artificial grass in my garden I do have lots of hanging baskets and planters in my garden for the bees and butterflies, in fact I get more visitors now, as before my garden was all decking and paving.

We put it down and had to remove it . The smell of dog pee when the sun came out and I was always cleaning it with Jeyse fluid .

We have fake grass (it was already down in the garden when we bought the house) we have this big smelly brute and have no issues with cleanliness or smell. We pick up the poop as soon as we can, brush it every now and then because all around our garden is bushes and trees so there’s a lot of leaf and blossom falling down. And a few times a year go out with the hose pipe and some bleach and give it a good wash and scrub with the brush again!

Real grass . As long as it's watered regularly and you keep topping it up with grass seed you should have a perfect lawn . X
by (1.2k points)
@gabor been trying to do that but it's hard work with all my other commitments.
by (870 points)
@fluid it's very hard work keeping a nice garden . Our has taken years to get it nice and its still not the way I want it . Lots more to do . X

Real every time, your dog is beautiful x
by (1.2k points)
@derouen thank you! I'm edging towards false but think she'd be gutted.
by (880 points)
@fluid she’s gorgeous. Personally I think there’s enough plastic in this world, but you have to do what’s right for you. She looks like she loves laying on the cool grass, does fake grass get warm? I’ve never had it so don’t know, all the best with your decision x
by (1.2k points)
@derouen it's more about all my bald patches which I try and keep on top of with seed and watering but they seem to be taking over. We are getting all the trees(that have died) out. We think they died due to neighbours tree. Anyway we want garden done but just can't decide about grass.
by (880 points)
@fluid it’s difficult I know, my neighbours have huge conifers and my plants suffer, I am forever feeding them. Good luck with your choice, look forward to seeing the results

I’ve had fake and if you have a small garden and a boxer sized dog it will start to smell after a few years. Mine did but saying that I didn’t know you could get it professionally cleaned. I have real grass now and prefer that. But I do believe it’s personal choice x
by (1.2k points)
@bessbessarabia7475 it's quite a size to be honest. She doesn't poop in garden and goes out 3 times a day but still wees on grass.
by (870 points)
@fluid should be ok just get the hose on it and if it does smell get the carper cleaners in they will give it a good clean.
by (870 points)
It did take about 3 to 4 years for mine to sink I had three small dogs and my fake turf was only 4 metres by 6 so not a massive area. X

This is my fake lawn. I have 2 dogs ( this is the big one) we laid this a year ago. I've had no smells or movement. I occasionally wash it with daz and give it a good brush. I also use a garden vac because I have big blossom trees at the back which make a huge mess. I've never regretted having it, and infact I'd recommend it with dogs.
by (580 points)
@poop70 do you remember which one you bought?
by (800 points)
@rampant7 I got it from grass direct. I cant remember the name but it's a 30mm pet friendly one. I think it was about £11. 99 sq mt.

Real grass. I'm not really sure why anyone would have fake grass. Don't mean to offend anyone but we have a big issue with our climate change what's the point in have something fake when it can be real. And help us to live. I have always had female dogs and male dogs with grass and no issues.

My sister had artificial installed for 11k (just labour) and the bloody dog is allergic to it and now on antihistamines for the rest of her life or until they can move. Massive environmental mistake in my opinion but each to their own xx
by (1.1k points)
@direction blooming heck how bigs her garden 11k!
by (590 points)
@ankylostomiasis4230 I have been quoted 5k for less then half of my garden, which is why I’m now opting to just returf it x

@litton877 omg! Do it yourself that's extortion! X
by (5.8k points)
@ankylostomiasis4230 it's really expensive to get it done properly that was the cheapest quote she got the highest was 24k. It is a pretty big garden and it all needed leveled out too but still extremely expensive xx

I would never have thought of getting it with having the dog but it’s great seeing that he’s fine with it! This picture is from his snooze on it today
by (2.8k points)
I have a pug too, he perfers the artifical grass we placed over an old patio to the real grass. He doesn't mess on it either does that on the real grass, it's we laid him his own carpet outside as far as he is concerned haha.

Wow so many things to think about, I'm thinking false but the dog just loves the grass. I really struggle to keep on top of it with seed and cutting as I work long hours but I'm worried I regret it when I retire ( hopefully in a few years). Need to count for and against and see which one comes on top. My other half wants to keep grass but he doesn't cut it and suffers with hayfever. I'm going to get a price for and price without so maybe that will settle it? The Dog has never walked on false grass before never mind rolled on it?
by (810 points)

I used to have real grass and after one winter with a dog changed to fake. The mud, the ruined patches etc were driving me to despair. Every time you let them out for a wee, mud being trodden back through the house. Agree and would say buy the best you can get. The cheap stuff isn’t great and can look really . I clean it once a week with Malodour 4 and that keeps it sterile and smelling fresh. Obviously it’s not nice to lay on artificial grass if your dog has been on it though - get a sun lounger!
by (590 points)

Looks good, the higher end stuff feels nice under foot. Smell with dogs, if you clean it with proper grass cleaner regularly and hose the wee away often it’s not too bad. The cleaner gets rid of the smell effectively but it will build up again if you don’t do it.

Real grass all the way. Fake grass and dogs. have both girls and boys and holy Moses don't ever put sand on it. Stinks to high heaven. Even more so with girls in heat and if your dog somehow gets hold of a watermelon and eats the whole thing it's way easier to hose the end result into real grass than chase it round a garden of fake grass. I'll leave that scenario just here.
