Hi guys.  I've spent all day digging borders out on my lawn ( with the help of my very strong 22yr old son lol ) .Hi guys. I've spent all day digging borders out on my lawn ( with the help of my very strong 22yr old son lol ) . I've mixed compost in with the soil and taken all the weeds out and turned it really well. I picked some bedding plants up when I did my weekly shop at asda this morning - but my knowledgable lovely neighbour tells me not to plant them until the end of may ? Is this correct ? X

Yes end of May is usually the recommended time to plant when there is no longer risk of frost, however because the weather has been so good I planted mine out yesterday & today. I dont think you can really make any hard & fast rules. I know I'm taking a bit of a gamble but feel optimistic, especially as I live in the SW. Still fingers crossed!

I've planted too. I meant to take my hanging baskets in but forgot. I've lost 2 plants out of about 24 that I bought! They just haven't taken. Where the others are growing already

Always best to wait as there is chance off a frost which would kill them it depends also what bedding plants you have bought

Yes before frost it will kill them. Just keep lightly hoeing to kill all the weeds . Ie leave the border fallow . It will be fab and very low maintenance then on . Bedding plants must stay indoors until all chances of frost has passed.

Yes there is still the risk of frost and it could kill them all

What I do is plant in pots then put the pots in the borders but I will fetch them in if there is a frost.

My bedding plants go out at the last bank holiday in May, I plant my hanging baskets up on the first bank holiday but keep them protected in the greenhouse at night until the last bank holiday

I wouldn't. It's not so much the frosts now as the dip between day and night. Keep your plants watered and indoors at night, but put them out through the day to get them really hardened off a d ready. Once it's that bit warmer, they'll romp away and be in optimum conditions. Your really knowledgeable neighbour is right.

I’ll def’ be keeping mine safe for another 2-3 weeks, as I really don’t want to risk them to a late frost.

I always plant mine this time of year , have done for years there selling them now for a reason. garden centres have all there bedding if that was the case they wouldn’t sell them till May it’s a good time now some rain some sun it’s fine what did you buy? Geraniums, dahlias, petunias ?

You can still get a frost up until May in the UK. You should ideally wait until any chance of frost have passed.

Mid May at the earliest. This is very unusually warm weather for April and might lead us into a false sense of security.

Ive planted everything and all my seeds they are coming up because im bored shitless because of this lockdown , if they die they die ! But we are still alive which is more important in these times of trouble , the only thing that is keeping me sane is my garden and i love my garden and every thing that is in it ! Even the large amount of bees , butterflies , blue tits and gold finches and were in manchester x
