We've just had the ivy cropped back on our back fence. It was sticking out nearly 3 feet. No leaves left but stems etc stuck to the fence. Looks so bare but needed to. done. Does anyone have any idea how soon it will start to re-leaf? Advice on quick growing annual climbers for shade appreciated too.

@daw12 Hope so. It was desperate to he done before the birds started nesting. My other half now feels sorry for the birds and thinks it's too harsh. Told him he can do it himself next time

We do ours every 3 years right back and the birds come back, they don’t re use nests so it’s like a spring clean.

Everything will start to grow as we get more light and it warms up, around March.

If it's an annual you want just to cover the fence until the ivy takes over again. You can get climbing nasturtiums. I grew them many years ago to cover a very ugly fence until I could paint it. Very pretty and climbed very fast.

Nothing but spring flowering bulbs will grow until the earth warms up because of more sunlight and daylight. Mid march everything starts to grow buds. including trees. So take your lead from them
