Well, tried laying a flag stone path today, dug the old path out, leveled it and put 2 inch of sand on. It wont get level, the stones are like see-saws. Why won't they be level? Any tips?

Have you used a roller to get the sand compacted before putting the slabs down

We just slabbed our drive, keep spirit level on it and keep packing the soil underneath until it level and doesn't rock. It's a lot of trial and error but it the only way we found worked without getting a professional in

Rake the sand before you lay the flags , that way the flag will find its level when tapped into place if not add sand to loose rocky end , unless your a proffessional its trial and error doing this .

Rake about 4 lines in the sand per slab. This will give them the movement needed to level

You need to bed them in with a sand a cement mixture, or they'll move constantly.

You need to compact your sand, even tramp it in and get a straight edge and pull it over the sand to level it, then lay your slabs.

. dig out 160mm . 100mm hardcore sub base . 30mm ish sand and cement laying course to lay your slabs on, mix it up with some water to allow for a good bed when putting it down. Sand will just constantly move

Cement all 4 corners and the center of each slab use a hammer with a towel wrapped over the head to tap them down while holding a spirit on the slab til you get your level do a nice soft 3/1 sand/cement mix should see you right

@billiot never dot and dab a slab! That’s bad practice that. Full bed always

Iv never seen the need for it when it's only being walked on if it was a car on the other hand then aye fair enough that's just too much concrete

@billiot hopefully you don’t lay slabs for a living then mate lol

@billiot often crack, or you end up with visible dabs showing thew the slabs

@dolora41284 I agree, but these are amateurs so this is the easiest thing to do

For someone doing it on a budget it would do and would save on materials like a said if being walked on it shouldn't be an issue Iv layed paths like that in the past and never been any cracks or issues with any of it
