Really embarrassing but we have mice in our shed :( I've caught four already in traps. Do I just keep putting traps down? We've locked up the animal feed so they can't get to it. I'm not sure why they are still coming as the shed is empty apart from a lawnmower now. It's a solid concrete floor too . My husband wants to convert the shed to a workshop but we can't if mice are coming in :/

Why kill them if it's just a shed ?
by (13.6k points)
@nightjar because she said they plan to make it an office.
by (1.9k points)
Because we want to turn the shed into a workshop and attached to the shed is our bird rescue aviary
by (460 points)
@lesleelesley they will be going for the bird seed as long as there is a food source they will keep coming
by (1.9k points)
We have rat proof locked feed stores for the seed. couldnt see any nibble marks on so I am not sure if they are getting into them. My guess is I am not sweeping as well as I thought XD
by (790 points)
@lesleelesley is it a big shed? Like if you think it's from sweeping what about a cheap hoover to run over there, my dad has a yellow one from argos and he uses it on his concrete floor in shed x

Keep trapping them, they'll soon stop
by (13.6k points)
@sell4003 do you think there's a finite number of mice out there?
by (620 points)
@andes no but I had exactly the same scenario in my shed. After tidying it up, we had another couple and as soon as they realise the food source is gone, they'll stop coming

Mice can get through a hole the size of a biro. Look for all those holes and fill them with wire wool, which they don't like to touch. They'll be looking for nesting sites so it'll be wild ones, so an endless supply.

Find their entry point and cover it with steel wool

We relocated 19 mice to a more rural location, we caught a few at a time in a humane trap and set them free. I understand to some they are a pain but to me they are just trying to get by. It took several years before we got more visitors and this time we have left them

We had mice in our garage, they would also occasionally walk round to our back door and let themselves in We tried traps which worked but weren't very nice so we rescued a cat and the cat keeps them away- we havent seen a mouse since except 2 dead ones in the garden

I would suggest catching and taking to country side but I am not sure if you could call it "essential travel" or try and explain to the police why you have a box of mice in your car

Don’t be embarrassed it’s very common . Do as suggested above . Wire wool any gaps , put traps down try and relocate if you can but that’s an impossibility at the moment . Don’t be made to feel bad because you don’t want to share your space with them .

by (690 points)
They dont like the smell of peppermint oil, soak cotton wool in it and put around and use the wire wool they dont like that either, you cant trap and take somewhere rural because of lockdown, they wont come near if you have some cat litter with urine in it, because they can smell a cat, not a nice smell but will rid them until you can clean it for workshop xx

Leave door to shed open, remove anything that they can eat or nest in, we were over run but doing this, are clear now after a week. Some say olbas oil or jeyes fluid deters them, didn't get a chance to try it, they will be field mice, try not to kill them

Once they realise their isnt a food store for them they will find somewhere else. My OH has to kerp all his fishing bait in a metal cabinet and bird seed for the same reason

We dont have a cat anymore (sadly lost him three weeks ago) and its not safe enough in our area to have an outdoor cat. I know not everyone agrees with the traps but it s a quicker death for the mice. before I put traps down our mini chickens liked to tear apart any mice they found :/

I’d put as many as you can get hold of down, around the sides

Very common. Just keep trapping them until they're gone. Keep the floor clean and put any food away in sealed tubs. If you've got any obvious gaps try and block them up. A mouse will get through a hole smaller than a 1p though, so it's hard to get rid completely! On the plus side mice are better than rats

Cats sometimes like to bring you them as gifts. It's no run chasing a bleeding mouse round the bedroom at 4 in the morning!
by (1.6k points)
@hyphenated7 I have the same problem me and the wife running around at 3am not good
by (1.6k points)
@hyphenated7  no they dont
by (2.3k points)
@hyphenated7 I had the same problem at my old house. Cats kept bringing them in. Dead or alive. Now I've got a pond I get the odd frog. Didn't know they squealed so loud
by (1.5k points)
@frigate28 some do They really do. Or a bird now that's a treat!
by (1.6k points)
@hyphenated7 ive had cats all my life, that treat is the cat wanting to chew and play with its catch in its own home/den. Normally we're fast asleep so its left on the step after the cat got bored. imo
by (1.5k points)
@frigate28 obvs your cat feels your capable of hunting for yourself.

I was told be a very good pest professional if you have grain animal feed etc they will smell it and come in. Metal containers and no food on the floor this was on a horse yard, he also said if you have mice then no rats and rats no mice.

I don't suppose you have jeyes fluid? Putting a 50 50 solution of water and jeyes fluid in a spray bottle and spraying all over the floor and anywhere you think they may be getting in once every couple of days for a week or so will get rid. Need to get onto it quick because they breed a lot!
by (4.1k points)
And don't leave your back door stood open, i had a mouse in the kitchen a couple of years back, it was quicker than my 2 terriers as well!

Embarrassed? Why? Lol lol. Iv had field mice move into my garage every winter. Sone have had babies. How ever Iv set up a plastic bucket trap with food in it. Once Iv caught them I take them to a field a mile away where the farmer leaves rubble so I put them there. I’m not ashamed they come into my garage. I actually get exited when I see they are in there as I think they are soooooo cute. Use humane traps and let them go some where miles from no where. Preferably try let them all go together rather than separately so they can stay together

Do you know someone with ferrets? Ask them for the old bedding when they change it over and sprinkle it around the boundary of the shed, they'll soon scarper. Works for rats as well.

@archiplasm my god that’s cute as hell. All these people on here saying “kill them” and there’s us to concentrating on just how cute they are lol
by (660 points)
@anitaanitra I understand how they can become a pest inside but. just humanely capture them and release them a few miles from the house. My little fella lives in my pond wall. No trouble at all! He's welcome to scoff his gob like this whenever he likes
by (780 points)
@archiplasm haha exactly lol. Mine munches the way through our snails and slugs. So I don’t mind them in the garden. The garage is a problem as they sometimes nibble at stuff but Iv set up a huge plastic box to catch them in. ( id say it’s a large Hampstead fair ground) lol
by (660 points)
@anitaanitra This was him having a good ol nibble

Clean well with jeyes fluid, they pee on their feet to scent mark territories but mainly trails, it's why it's unhealthy to have them about. i used traps that electrocuted them, bit more expensive than normal traps but work brilliantly. I previously used baits, poisons, traps & every type of repellent I could find and only this continued to work. Hope that helps & good luck!

If you can get your self a little dog like a patterdale or maybe a cat, i recently moved into a house with a big garden and we were noticing noises and that like scratching and the neighbors said they have a rat problem, av got 2 lurchers and a patterdale, hunting dogs, and the neighbors were saying how the rats have gone, my dog was sniffing them out and we could put traps down, we built a better fence and tidyed the garden aswell, my patterdale caught one and weve never hurd anything since x

If you want to set a trap, bait it with something oily like peanut butter the whole cheese thing is a total myth. Place traps along the edge of a wall and maybe cover it with something - if anything they'll enter out of curiosity especially if it's covered. If you use a humane trap, take and release it a LONG distance away - I used to take mine at least a mile away. If you have/catch one chances are you'll have another adult and maybe even several young.

Don’t be embarrassed. I had them in the ground floor flat I was living in once a few years ago. Went away in December for a couple of weeks came back and there was  everywhere. They’d got in my babies cot, the sofa, my bed everywhere. Was absolutely horrific. I’m a bit of a clean freak as well so for me was even worse. Made me feel dirty. Prior to this happening i always though I would use humane methods, but when mother instinct kicks in and they’ve been in your babies bed all that went out the window. It wasn’t nice and I didn’t feel good about it but I had to. Just keep doing what you are doing x
