Will a climbing rose / rambling rose grow up a conifer? And if it will what kind of compost if any should I add? The ground is fairly compacted Thanks

Remember that any soil under a conifer will be completely sterile, they are very hungry and thirsty trees.

I'll tell you what will grow up a conifer: Trapaeolum speciosum/Scottish Flame flower. It's a beauty, hard to germinate from seed, but a perennial and just the pairing you'll admire.

A rose will need more support than a conifer will provide. Try a clematis or other self supporting climber.

Rambler will cover it use wire or netting to start it up when it reaches some branches it will keep going
