Please help me decide, do I put a roof on my pergola? Iv got a planted rose to attempt to grow up it but I just dont know if some kind of roof would be better or some kind of shelter

Id put a roof on it. You can then use it all year with your garden furniture out and not have to worry of it all getting wet

We put a brown polycarbonate one on ours. sheets are on eBay x

Also fixed awnings , also off eBay for privacy and not so great weather

We had one like this and couldn't decide what kind of roof, so this is the top of it now.

I think what you choose will depend on how much you want the natural light to come in to the house, we have this roof which is excellent for keeping the rain off but has reduced the natural light in to the house even when it is in the open position

Highly recommend a roof. We used the perspex sheets corrugated ones but changing it to the flat sheets as too much crap sticks in the grooves. Love as the grandkids can get out an play on it, dug can lie out in it and we can chill in it during the wet weather which as u know is usually 78% of the year lol. Saves the furniture and stops the decking going slippery.
