Mines looked a bit miserable until I repotted it with fresh compost and a good watering. I've just planted it in the ground and it's springing to life x

Looks like you have new shoots in the centre. Repot, feed and water well. Roots might be cramped so might need larger pot or put in the ground.

The pot may be too small as well as the soil being too dry
+53 votes
by (6k points)
It could have got too dry. Lupins need lots of root space. Their roots go very deep so it would not have been very happy in this pot.

Weevils lift out out and separate the soil. Youl find little white grubs
by (570 points)
@hatley that’s what I was thinking too
by (610 points)
@hatley what are those? I found some in my hanging basket, then I dug a wasp out too
by (2k points)
@grampus need to kill them with nematodes. They will ruin you're whole garden. The bug eats leaves and foliage. And the larvae kill the whole planrt by eating the entire root system.

One of my plants died very quickly. When I pulled it out the pot, there were white grubs in the pot that had eaten the roots. Pull it out of the pot, check the soil, and maybe replant replant in fresh compost x

Pots too small for it (root bound) better off in the ground more room for it to bloom and grow . Looks very dry too but again that's down to being in the wee pot, And by the looks of the crop circle type squished foliage is due to some ones precious pussy curling up and sleeping on it.

Lupins enjoy full sun or dappled shade. The ideal soil is moist but well-drained and can be acid, chalky or neutral. Like many other perennials with tall flowers, they will benefit from a sheltered position.

Check that it hasn't been got at by vine weevil larvae, small white maggot looking beasts in the soil. Take hold of the base of the plant and give it a little tug, if the roots have been eaten it will just come out. Hope I'm wrong but I've previously lost plants this way that looked fine then suddenly died.

Check for greenfly, plus snails love munching on the new shoots and another pest is weevils in the pot soil they eat roots, when planting in the ground, remove as much of the plant pot soil as possible from the roots in case any pests. Plant giving a good watering with plant feed and a spray or watering with a pest deterrent, try placing some straw around the base of plant or gravel stones as slugs or snails don’t like crawling over them.

Possibly vine weevil grubs in the soil. Chews away the roots.
