Hello everyone,  I am running a shopping campaign and it was very profitable. However, some days it will be profiting but very little. I would usually get a ROAS of 3-4. But on bad days it will be a 2. 2 ROAS. So I added negative keywords to see if that will increase my profitability and consistency, however after doing that, the next day I am spending money and it has made zero sales. Should I just add those negative keywords back in or should I start a smart shopping campaign as I have over 100 conversions with that product? And if I start a smart shopping campaign, do I need to turn off the other campaigns running the same product? Thank you so much for your help!

I experimented with Smart Shopping campaigns back in November man and did not like them at all because of the lack of control.

@boart were your results better? How long did you run them for?

@cowper I only ran them for one month. Performance was worse. Maybe I didn’t give it enough time but I couldn’t risk continuing

@boart this is usually the issue. If you don’t have enough volume too it just doesn’t work as well. 6 weeks is the absolute minimum for smart campaigns. But IMO 8 - 10 weeks at least. It is normal for new campaigns to take MONTHS to hit ROAS targets. This is where most go wrong in general. Let me put it this way, I had a client I grew from 0 new store to £20k+ sales per month using almost exclusively smart campaigns. This took well over a year and we were losing money/ breaking even for the first few months due to low profit margins. But this is just part of the process. Unless you already have an audience you are essentially buying data for a period of time. All paid advertising is the same really. They do work, but in a specific way and you don’t get amazing ROAS overnight unless you have everything lined up perfectly from day one. Which is possible but very unusual.

@cowper There are few people in the world which will wait for you to show them success for 10 weeks .

@raynell9 Success is relative to the time frame we are talking about. Success in the first 4, 8, 12 etc weeks are not the same as 6 months. Setting expectations for clients IMO is one of the most important aspects of offering a good service.

You are trying to do too many things at once here. Proper testing has to be ISOLATED changes. If you added in new negatives and sales have dropped then you should remove them or review them. But a single day isn’t usually long enough to tell. How many clicks and sales have you seen total over the last 30 days?

And related to this, Anthony, I'd say to go and look at your Search Terms report an then you can see for sure whether you have excluded keywords which had previously been converting.

Hello Abbie, thank you for your suggestion. Yes I should be isolating my variables more better. I never really thoguht of that. Thank you so much! And I have gotten 1. 44k clicks and 114 sales

@implicative thank you for your help Paul! Yes I have but my sales are spread all over the place with keywords that barely even spent past 20 dollars (Selling product for $40) that made sales. So I am not too sure if I can rely on those yet. And yes, I only excluded the keywords that have made zero sales but a majority spent less than 3 dollars.

I woul recommend a Smart Shopping Campaign only if you have a lot of conversion in the last 30 Days (at least between 50 and 100). To help you on the normal shopping campaign i need more informations. Which kind of product? Which Market? Did you add negative keywords based on what? Search terms? which match type? And also, How is structured the campaign? What bidding strategies? Are u segmenting for product categories?

Hello Luca, thank you so much for your help! I really appreciate it! Yes, so they are earphones in the headphone categories in google ads. I added the keywords to my negative keywords that my ad has shown up for. But most keywords that made sales barely spent past 15 dollars and my product is selling for 40. All keywords that have been added barely spent 40 cents. Even my top-performing keywords that made sales barely spent 20 dollars. I am using manual CPC and there is no campaign goal set up. Thank you so much for your help Luca! I really appreciate it!
