Up 2.  0 this week.Up 2. 0 this week. 160. 6 to 162. 6. I pay very close attention to my food intake, exercise, water, etc. And if I gain, I’m almost always very aware of why (that day I went over in points, that night I had pizza, haven’t been very active, etc. ). But I have zero clue about this one. Only thing I can think of. This past Tuesday I started taking Prednisone (corticosteroids) for hives I mentioned in a previous post. 3 pills each morning for past 5 days, then 2 per day for 5 days, then 1 per day for 5 days. Fortunately, this isn’t a long-term thing. Just 10 more days. Could it be the Prednisone?
Up 2.0 this week. 160.6 to 162.6.

YES most definitely. You're lucky it is only 2 pounds. I've seen people on it that you couldn't recognize them.

I gained weight when I took prednisone and I was crazy hungry all the time. It took months for me to get back to normal.

Could absolutely be the medication. It is know to cause water retention and bloating. You may see a slow down in your progress but keep pushing through!

I was on it for 6 months and gained 20 pounds, which I lost as soon as the med stopped. It is a wonderful med when needed.

It is absolutely the prednisone! Causes water retention! It will go away as fast as it came when you stop taking it!

YES‼️ Prednisone causes you to retain water. Our dog had to take long term and he really blew up like a balloon while taking it. Also drank lots of water and urinated lots.

My mom was on it and when she was on it for one wk she gained 8 lbs.

Prednisone creates the perfect storm of weight gain. It comes at you a few ways: 1. It slows your metabolism and changes how you process glucose. Avoid sugar. Hidden sugar. 2. Fluid retention happens. Avoid salt. Drink lots of water, lemon water, herbal tea- fennel and peppermint I was one various dosages on and off 6 months. Lessons I learned to cope: Avoid salt and simple carbs. Embrace fruits and vegetables.

Yes believe it does have that side effect. I've heard people who were on it say that. Once You're off of that you should be like regular then

Cortisone gain should go away ina couple of weeks without you making any changes. It is fluid retention.

Definitely I took it once for hives and never again. I definitely gained from taking it
by (12.5k points)
@rectilinear4 Arruzzo My hives were awful! Almost cleared up now. Appointment with allergist this coming Monday. I’ve apparently developed an allergy to something I’ve never been allergic to anything until about 6 weeks ago. I think I’ve narrowed it down to chocolate or tree nuts. Please let it be tree nuts. PLEASE!
by (7.1k points)
Lol. Well I completely understand I was covered. There were hives where there shouldn’t have been hives! And I had the lip swelling out. I was a mess but I never found out why it happened and happily it never happened again

Definitely. I was taking it a couple of weeks ago and it did the same thing. The bad part is that it was real easy to put on so fast but it doesn't come off that fast. At least not for me.

Definitely the prednisone. I was on it for) years for my asthma and honestly doubled in size. I have to take it every few months and I’ve always had a slight gain. It makes me feel hungry all the time and I retain water. Drink more water than you can imagine. It’ll come off once you’re off the meds.
by (2.9k points)
@waikiki76 - same with me. It’s a great medication for asthma, but definitely puts on weight, plus hunger & mood swings.
by (12.5k points)
@waikiki76 I will for sure drink more water. So far, haven’t noticed any increase in hunger. Just the weight gain.
by (20.4k points)
@cerebrovascular597 for some reason the water seemed to help me.

Prednisone will do it for sure! Causes you to hold water. Give it some time when you are done with it , it will come back off.
by (12.5k points)
@zigzag Taylor Bulin I had a goal to be 155 by the time return to the office on @banns59 2. Was well on my way, and prob would have beat it. Now I may not hit it. Oh well. Lol

Just keep working on it and after you are through with the drugs it may be closer than you think

I am a nurse and can tell you with 100 percent certainty that it is the steroids that caused your weight gain. For most people steroids cause an increase in appetite so gaining 2 pounds is not bad. It will come off when you complete your course of steroids.

Yes, it causes fluid retention.

by (4.5k points)
100% it could be. And not trying to get too personal since I don’t know your background but if you don’t know your source of hives it is worth looking into a full thyroid panel and if you are on thyroid medication looking into that. I had full body hives for months and went to every doctor and specialist you could imagine and was on prednisone and allergy meds, hospital etc. and come to find out between my thyroid medication and food allergies that was it. Then I recently read an entire article on it too and the same thing was happening to a friend of mine. Anyhow, don’t fret, prednisone will made you gain but once you’re off it you will go down unless you eat extra calories because it makes you hungry which sometimes happens. Take care and good luck with everything, I’m certain you’ll be fine
by (12.5k points)
@baily10 I have an appointment on Monday with an allergist. I think I’ve narrowed it down to chocolate or tree nut allergy. I’ve never had allergies or hives in my life. I hope it’s tree nuts and not chocolate. Lol. Or could be something else. To my knowledge, I don’t have thyroid issues and am on no medication other than the Prednisone. No prior meds.
