If you paint your deck, be prepared to always keep painting it. You can never really return it back to the 'wood look'. We stain our spindles but stopped staining the deck boards and handrails as stain will crack & peel and look awful. We oil our deck boards and handrails, and that fades much better. It also brings out the lovely colour of the wood.
