So if my SmartThings buttons are local and the controlled devices are local and the SmartThings hub is set to allow local control, why don't the buttons work when the Samsung servers are down? I thought that was the whole point of local control.

Most buttons SmartApps operate in the cloud, not locally. Check the Device in the web API view, it will show which items operate locally vs cloud

@pisciculture40350 You need to go into the IDE on the web, click on Devices and it will show you there. The URL for the IDE is here

@parcenary894 thanks again just looked. VERY disappointed that my Inovelli switches are listed as cloud. (i love everything about them, except now this) Weird that Lutron and Harmony are also cloud. Im prettu sure they are local between each other.

@pisciculture40350 A few things. If you use custom device handlers (like all the Inovelli switches have you do), they will ALWAYS run in the cloud. If you edit one of those switches in the IDE and change the device handler to a Generic Z-wave Dimmer (or Z-wave switch if it doesn't have dimming ability), it will then run locally. You just won't have some of the bells and whistles on the config of the switch. Your call though.

@pisciculture40350 Yes, those Lutron devices will always have to be cloud based from smartthings, b/c the ST hub needs to make a request to the Lutron cloud to operate a given light, and the Lutron hub executes the command. That requires a trip to the cloud no matter what. If there are automations that you could program on the lutron app directly for the Lutron Hub, I'd bet THOSE might run locally, but that would be it.

@parcenary894 i wonder if the innovellis will store special those settings locally in the device. Like if I set the dimming ramp speed and LED config. then change the device handler. Trial and error i guess. A project for this weekend. Will probably lose the LED status options for sure though.

I'd like to know the answer to this as well. I have been under the assumption that my lights are local, and this morning was an unpleasant surprise at a very bad time.

Thanks @parcenary894!

The automation has to be able to run locally as well.

Use Smart Lighting for all automations!

All of mine work when the network is down, they're set up in the smart lighting app.

Which app is this? Not in the SmartThings app I presume?

@camarena850 under the Smart Apps menu in the SmartThings app

@camarena850 Smart lighting app is the only app that runs local on SmartThings.

Got it! Thanks! Never noticed that buried in there.

My lights all worked this morning with my lighting automations. The only problem I noticed was when my Sleep Cycle app alarm triggered my lights to turn on, Alexa couldn’t set level. That’s when I knew something was up.

I guess it's a testament to my system setup, b/c all my lights worked fine this morning and I didn't even notice there was an outage. I've gotten bit a few times in the past which inspired me to get all critical lighting running locally, so it seems I've succeeded.

The cheap ST button has 3 triggers it can do; Pressed, Held and Double Pressed. I have Pressed and Held cloud based with various rules (Webcore) but each button has Double Pressed handled 100% locally, for those times when ST is not working properly. Being local, the rules are simpler - but each room and each button has basic local control even when ST is malfunctioning (this morning) or the network is out. Sweet.
