You dig 4” down and then lay 2” of mot stone wack it solid then put a membrane down then put 2” of grit sand down wack it screed it out with a piece of wood using your existing concrete or flags as a level then lay your artificial grass and pin down with galvanised 6” nails that’s the proper way to do it then get a stiff brush and brush against the pile to make it stand and job done

@longicorn that's how I thought it was done  (plaster) advised a client to do it that way then ate my words after a few Google searches. Your way sounds right. The advised way doesn't sound like it'll last

If your soil underneath get wet and bogy it will wash up and onto the top of your grass but if you put the stone down first it gives you a good hard standing to work on which will also help as drainage. I’ve always been told that anyway can lay the top coat in this case the artificial grass but you need to get the ground work right before you do it. Inbox me if you need any advice

Pretty much right except instead of the nails secure it to a treated timber fame. (I install artificial grass for a living).

@magnetics I see where your coming from I lay it aswell I think that just preference as I have seen other people’s work who have used the timber edgings and the grass has sunk more than likely due to ground works not being right and you could see the line of timber edgings but that’s just personal preference as everyone has there own way of doing that bit

@longicorn if 65 to 75mm of compacted type 1 or similar is used, before the sharp sand the sub base shouldnt sink as this is the same thickness as you'd use for a patio. The danger with nailing it down is that it can easily come up. If you use a timber frame and do the sub base properly the grass will look spot on for years

@magnetics ye I ive not had any problems with it it’s just what I’ve seen as someone had used building sand instead of sharp sand and the only grass I’ve ever had stolen us when it’s been glued down to tarmac and they’d cut out where the glue wasnt

Is that top soil? Basically just go over it with a flat rake or a roller to get it as flat as you can then lay the turf. Keep hosing it down, you want the soil underneath wet too.

Did this the other day

Membrain down to stop weeds growing up through it. Layer of stone for drainage Layer of sand for a nice flat surface Brush silicone sand on top of "grass" to weigh it down
by (760 points)
@bunin73 Twinning-Stroud you can put the silica sand on or kiln dried sand that does weigh it down but also helps keep the pile stood up once it’s brushed up

You need to get stone wack it down then put sand over the top of the stone and get a wacker plate on the sand then get a membrane over the top and then lay it with proper artificial grass nails and artificial grass adhesive glue and strips of joining 2 pieces together x

@carbone132 there’s no such thing as artificial grass nails they only 6” galvanised nails which react with the stone which holds them in
by (450 points)
@longicorn as you can tell I’m no expert so I didn’t know what they are called, I just knew they were certain ones for artificial grass that I got for my garden
by (760 points)
@carbone132 and if you put the membrane on top of the stone it stops the grit sand washing through the stone over time
by (450 points)
@longicorn I cant remember which way we did it but I know people who don’t even put membrane down and it looks awful. Has weeds growing through ‍♀️

Timber frame with a compacted stone/sharp sand sub base with membrane on top every time. Anyone telling you to peg/nail it doesn't know what they are talking about.
