I believe the ultimate weed killer, if mixed properly and laid correctly, is CONCRETE!
by (520 points)
If I wasnt in rented property I would rip it up and lay grass to make my garden bigger xx

@spondaic I wasn't being serious Heather. I've been tending our garden since we moved in 1988. We moved here with 5 kids. We've had sand pits in it for for children and grandchildren, and all manner of contraptions. Grass is wonderful but old age tends to alter perspective. ?

Garden would be so much bigger and nicer without it

Normal salt mixed with white vinegar, a squirt of fairy liquid and water will kill the weeds. get the large bags of cooking salt and bog standard vinegar and it won’t cost more than a fiver.

But salt will also kill any small incest that is looking after your soil. just try and keep at em pulling them out
by (1.4k points)
@crittenden Salt will only harm any animal that ingests it or living in fresh water. Salt kills plants by Osmosis.

Just remember folks, where the soil is contaminated by salt, nothing grows. It's not just weeds it kills. So be careful where you use it.

Fireplaces ash works just as well, secondary benefit is it firms up gravel to concrete like hardness

Why don’t you just get a hoe and chop them off every few weeks? It takes 2 minutes and no poisons involved.

Regular Aldi salt works - BUT be careful it isn’t washed into lawns or flowerbeds - if you have light coloured gravel Rock salt discolours it
by (2.2k points)
We have a gravelled extra parking place . I wait until it isn’t windy and closely just pour the salt on - great to do if rain is expected later - just pour it on section by section - after a couple of times doing this it should be months until you see the odd weed - even if you water it in or let the rain wash it in - do make sure you wash any of your animal paws that may have walked across it for the next couple of days x

Ohhhhj geez look at the crying face to my comment about a completely gravelled area - let me go out buy tons of weed killer, bleach, muriatic acid and use that instead

Don't use salt, it stays in the soil & builds up. It'll kill your plants as well as weeds. Go to a pound shop & buy a proper weedkiller it's only a pound after all!

I had loads of weeds at my garage. So I mixed up vinegar and salt and put it down. Weeds are gone! Cheaper than any weed killer and no sign of any weeds growing back.
by (590 points)
@festa is there a scientific measurement or just tip in and mix?
by (640 points)
@babu412 nah no measurement just tip and mix. I just mixed the whole bottle of vinegar I got and the whole bag of salt. Only cost about £1.
by (590 points)
@festa perfect! Thanks - I’ll give that a go ☺️

Salt, vinegar boiling water, bleach etc will will kill all the little insects, and worms etc, destroy all the goodness in the soil and eco system. Please don't use them. Just pull the weeds out. x
