We’ve put up Some 6ft fence panels between us and our neighbour. The neighbour is now saying it’s too high as it’s over 6ft when you include the fence boards at the bottom. Do they need to be 6ft including the boards or where do I legally stand with this? We are civil with each other but not exactly “friendly”  thanks x

I'd love a higher fence to stop the neighbours ball smashing against and loosening panels plus kicking over moat days
by (570 points)
@overbid ask them to replace the panel. Or take them to court if its your property.
by (810 points)
@necessitarianism not my own I asked housing they said we have to replace that's like getting blood out a stone they dnt care there waiting to move

We have got l think 12inch concrete boards Then 6 X 6 fence panels So it could be 7 ft. Or 8 ft high no problems

by (2k points)
I didn't know there was any kind of limit. Next door have but a 7 ft one up. I hate it. I like the old stick n wire fencing from the past so you can chat to your neighbours while having a coffee, or beer. I'm sure all these unpersonal mini prisons don't help with mental health.
by (740 points)
@dehaven466 chat out the front to neighbours and privacy in the back, just my opinion
by (520 points)
We dont choose our neighbours , so not everyone wants to be in full view. Especially having children you want privacy
by (2k points)
@murdock49412 when we were children the fences were taken down between the five houses where we lived. seventeen children in total and it was wonderful. In one of the houses lived an old couple who's family lived miles away and we were their 'other family'. The lady used to bake with or for us and the man make circus skills equipment & little fair stands. great times
by (740 points)
@murdock49412 I don’t mind a polite hello out the front but apart from that I totally want to not look someone in the eye while I’m chilling in garden I have a gap in the bushes halfway up garden and I do not like it!
by (520 points)
Sounds lovely, however in 2020 we are more informed about the people among us and I definitely want my child safe in my sight
by (1.6k points)
@dehaven466 opposite for me. Taller the better. If I had to chat to my neighbours I’d be miserable

It might seem petty, but sometimes can turn to a feud. If council have said it ok, then the neighbours can not do anything about it, and may stop the feud.

Bloody moaners some people why doss it matter how tall it is. Mine r the same they have a small fence and are always putting things up against it to block our view ( not that I am interested in her garden) but won't fork out for a new fence
by (1k points)
@maritime if i put more than a 6ft fence up my neighbour would have no sunshine once it started to go down. Maybe ask why it is too high to ascertain if a compromise can be made.
by (960 points)
@anabasis no sunshine? The sun is in the sky not in the next garden that's ridiculous if they moan about that I know 6ft is the limit but what sad lives they lead to go out and measure the fence

@maritime not saying its right or wrong but maybe a conversation to be had.

Nosy bastards! I don’t want to see my neighbours so why would they want to see me I do not get it ‍♀️

Jeez u think she would have more important things at moment to worry about. I have 4 neighbours fences as in block of 4 flats so for adjoining gardens. Ive just paid for whole my self so they cant complain dont want to go halfs. Now having high gazebo built cause of neighbours oak tree ruining my garden not her fault as its protected and council wont cut it back. Its ur privacy so why do they want it lowered gives them privacy

@caecilian632 @bruch311 Jones can I just ask why it bothers u?

It doesn’t. Just reading peoples comments saying it’s against the law to have over 6 foot

1. 8metres high from the floor. It also depends on what was there before. If there was a 1m high fence then you have to seek permission off your neighbour first, if he objects or u think he would then you can obtain planning permission. It’s all dependent on your council planning rules and regulations. I have just been through a similar one and I now have a 1. 8m high fence to stop mr moody from seeing into my garden and complaining about me jet washing my patio once in a while.

I moved in to my home 2 years ago. My neighbours are elderly and it's all so amicable. I even cleared my neighbours garden for her last week as she is disabled. I suppose I'm lucky. One of the fences is only waist height so I can see into my neighbours living room, but I keep an eye on her. Make sure I, or a member of the family wave and check on her daily. I'm so lucky to have good neighbours

Our council is 2 meters which is 6ft 6, suspect most councils are the same. So if you have the board at the bottom and 6ft panels that’s perfectly fine. Have they said why it’s a problem?
+90 votes
by (2.3k points)
If your garden is higher than theirs the measurements are taken from your side of the fence. My dad had the same issue with his lovely brick wall on his side it was 6 ft exactly on their side 8ft as the garden was lower on their side.

Surely it's basic manners to consult the neighbour before just sticking up a fence, eve. If you don't get on well. I would. My neighbours have stuck hedges in which I'm not overly happy about. Our only view is over their garden across to a valley. That will be blocked once their hedge has grown leaving us a view of a building wall at the end of our garden.
by (590 points)
@cauca what would your neighbours consulting you what they put in their garden have achieved other than them then knowing you didn't want it there. I mean I'd mention it but their opinion isn't my problem . x
by (890 points)
@trillbee50260 it's about fairness and respect for others. It's their border also. By putting a hedge in, my neighbours have blocked the only view from my property. I wouldn't dream of doing that to someone else. X

Personally. if u want a 6ft fence have a 6ft fence. some people just like to moan :)
by (1.2k points)
@volute39 that's a tad selfish actually.
by (800 points)
@unknow9 not really. If you want privacy you should be able to have privacy
by (1.2k points)
@volute39 no arguing with that but that still puts my garden in shade. And makes me feel like suddenly I'm in a rather nasty council car park.
by (800 points)
@unknow9 yeah but I would personally prefer to have a 6 ft fence and have privacy to do what I want in my garden without neighbours seeing into it . I have 4 ft fences atm and I hate it I feel like I'm in a shared garden. so yeah if I wanted 6ft fences I would put 6 ft fences in, just my opinion . it isn't harming the neighbours really . if someone did it and it made my garden look dull I would do stuff to my garden to make it bright and not so dull x
by (1.6k points)
We have the same problem with our neighbour at the moment. The are claiming putting a 6ft fence will cast shade in their garden however there is no fence at all at the moment and it's super awkward and not private at all. Legally you can have 6ft and trees/shrubs can be any height
by (800 points)
@indra always had 6ft fences until now and I would love to have them again. so much more private  and if you want to rescue a dog you need 6ft fences anyway so most people that own or want to own dogs have 6ft for safety too

@merat719 I'd assume the extra 6 inches is to allow a gap at the bottom to prevent it rotting x

I assumed it was 6ft fence with obviously a little gap at the bottom to prevent it rotting but probably best talking to your local council to get correct answer as it probably depends on the council aswell. 6ft 6 does sound about right as that would allow the gap at the bottom. Anything higher you're meant to apply for planning permission x

Clause on my estate is 3 foot limit front of house and back. But I do live in Grasmere in centre of national park Lake District. Not only would it be so unkind and unfair to block my neighbours view but from my armchair where I’m sitting at this moment I glance to my left through the back door fully glazed window and across the trickling easdale beck over the meadow of the valley right up dumail raise to grisdale tarn, dolly wagon crag to the beginning of helvelyn as shadows fall on grazing deer amongst the herd wick sheep. Oh there’s a Herron too. Would I like a 6ft 6 inch fence. Can’t say I would to be honest
