We’ve put up Some 6ft fence panels between us and our neighbour. The neighbour is now saying it’s too high as it’s over 6ft when you include the fence boards at the bottom. Do they need to be 6ft including the boards or where do I legally stand with this? We are civil with each other but not exactly “friendly” thanks x

I didn't know there was any kind of limit. Next door have but a 7 ft one up. I hate it. I like the old stick n wire fencing from the past so you can chat to your neighbours while having a coffee, or beer. I'm sure all these unpersonal mini prisons don't help with mental health.

when we were children the fences were taken down between the five houses where we lived. seventeen children in total and it was wonderful. In one of the houses lived an old couple who's family lived miles away and we were their 'other family'. The lady used to bake with or for us and the man make circus skills equipment & little fair stands. great times

Ive just paid for whole my self so they cant complain dont want to go halfs. Now having high gazebo built cause of neighbours oak tree ruining my garden not her fault as its protected and council wont cut it back. Its ur privacy so why do they want it lowered gives them privacy

1. 8metres high from the floor. It also depends on what was there before. If there was a 1m high fence then you have to seek permission off your neighbour first, if he objects or u think he would then you can obtain planning permission. It’s all dependent on your council planning rules and regulations. I have just been through a similar one and I now have a 1. 8m high fence to stop mr moody from seeing into my garden and complaining about me jet washing my patio once in a while.

I moved in to my home 2 years ago. My neighbours are elderly and it's all so amicable. I even cleared my neighbours garden for her last week as she is disabled. I suppose I'm lucky. One of the fences is only waist height so I can see into my neighbours living room, but I keep an eye on her. Make sure I, or a member of the family wave and check on her daily. I'm so lucky to have good neighbours

Surely it's basic manners to consult the neighbour before just sticking up a fence, eve. If you don't get on well. I would. My neighbours have stuck hedges in which I'm not overly happy about. Our only view is over their garden across to a valley. That will be blocked once their hedge has grown leaving us a view of a building wall at the end of our garden.

it's about fairness and respect for others. It's their border also. By putting a hedge in, my neighbours have blocked the only view from my property. I wouldn't dream of doing that to someone else. X

We have the same problem with our neighbour at the moment. The are claiming putting a 6ft fence will cast shade in their garden however there is no fence at all at the moment and it's super awkward and not private at all. Legally you can have 6ft and trees/shrubs can be any height

always had 6ft fences until now and I would love to have them again. so much more private and if you want to rescue a dog you need 6ft fences anyway so most people that own or want to own dogs have 6ft for safety too

I'd assume the extra 6 inches is to allow a gap at the bottom to prevent it rotting x

Evans I think its to do with modern fences that have the concrete kick boards at the bottom.

As we are now metric, it's 2 metres which is actually more than 6ft. I think it's fine.

I assumed it was 6ft fence with obviously a little gap at the bottom to prevent it rotting but probably best talking to your local council to get correct answer as it probably depends on the council aswell. 6ft 6 does sound about right as that would allow the gap at the bottom. Anything higher you're meant to apply for planning permission x

If its two private properties it depends who responsibility the fence is (deeds) if it's theirs and you've erected a fence on their property they are within their rights to ask you to remove it.

Clause on my estate is 3 foot limit front of house and back. But I do live in Grasmere in centre of national park Lake District. Not only would it be so unkind and unfair to block my neighbours view but from my armchair where I’m sitting at this moment I glance to my left through the back door fully glazed window and across the trickling easdale beck over the meadow of the valley right up dumail raise to grisdale tarn, dolly wagon crag to the beginning of helvelyn as shadows fall on grazing deer amongst the herd wick sheep. Oh there’s a Herron too. Would I like a 6ft 6 inch fence. Can’t say I would to be honest
